What I Have Learned About Climbing The Family Tree

I think that I mentioned that I am almost half way through the genealogy course that I'm taking and it is amazing what I have learned the last few weeks. I had always thought that you had to have tons of information to start with, but if you don't have it, don't give up. There are tons of blogs out there that are constantly talking about their own family members and little tricks that they have tried. I once did a search and then lost it (that's for another post) and found out that my particular branch was part of a 15,000 person family tree. The minute you find something like that, do a quick save so that you can find it again. And don't think that if your name isn't spelled exactly as you spell your name... that it's not your family. My own Grandfather added an "e" to the end of our last name so that it simply would look sophisticated and from the last chapter of the course, it is extremely common for people to do that!

Ha, ha, my grandmother did that, add an e, turning our surname from Toy to Toye so the kids wouldn't get teased so much. We still got teased!
