Music I Don't "Get"

I was raised on country music -- think Buck Owens and Hank Williams, not that stuff that sounds like 80's rock that they're calling "country music" today. As a result, there were things that people consider "iconic" today that never appealed to me. I never "got" the Doors, for instance. Even after 40 years of listening to rock and roll they don't do anything for me. The only song of theirs I like is "Touch Me," which sounds more like a pop song that someone like Frank Sinatra might have done. As for the rest of their material, I didn't see anything special about it. "Like a dog without a bone and an actor out on loan"? Nah, that's not "poetry" to me. Speaking of popular people who died about the same time, there's Jimi Hendrix. Having grown up listening to people like Chet Atkins, Merle Travis, and Don Rich (Buck Owens' guitar player), that should be no shock to anyone. Even when I started listening to rock I gravitated toward more melodic guitarists (I love Mark Knopfler, for instance). Hendrix and his impersonation of a Doors song ("Light My Fire") never did anything for me. I certainly understand that the Doors and Hendrix have significance in the history of rock and roll, but for me, they never did anything.

We all have those groups that do nothing for us. Your favorites EJ and Eagles never made an impression on me. That's why the oh so true "To each his own."

Interesting comments. Music is a personal thing and i think that in a lot of cases what moves you in your teen years becomes "your music". I grew up listening to rock and love eclectic prog rock bands that sort of reference every genre. Steve Morse is my favourite guitar player (Dixie Dregs among others). FWIW I've never understood two of the biggest guitar acts of my time. Hendrix and Zeppelin. Neither did anything for me. They just seemed to play the blues not that much better than anybody else. On the other hand there were other bands at the same time (Purple, Floyd, Tull) that pushed the musical envelope and boundaries. None of them are spoken about in the same breath as the other two. I think that has more to do with media perception than anything else. I could talk about this subject for ever, but it goes around in circles
