Freelancing Jobs or Full Time Jobs, what will you opt for ?

Nowadays, with the advent in technology it has become a little easier to work from home and at the same time earn too. But this doesn't mean that earning money online is easy. There are many other kinds of risks involved in it, like clients delaying payments, or even vanishing when the payment time comes, unclear requirements etc. And if we look at the positive side then they are also worth mentioning here, like one can work at any time of day, can work as much he/she may like to, for ladies with small kids it gets much easier to manage both kids n work, no need for nannies etc... So, what do you say Freelancing Jobs or Full Time Jobs ?

Freelancing work, it gives you time although not always give you work when you need it.

@ashuli I think I would rather be freelance then working full time, that is for sure, but we can't always do what we want to do, if only.

@kevin1877uk The freelance freedom from bosses breathing down your neck is great but the struggle to keep the income coming in can get too much stress and if you do go under recovery is extremely difficult

It is always better to have a full time job. If one has a full time job, it gives him a kind of security and he tries to deliver his best. Now a days many organisations/companies allow 'work from home' and it is a good option for women who have families to look after.

I do both right now. I used to work from home until a lawyer friend asked me to work for him. But I still maintain my online job since my online employer doesn't mind me working full time. So I work on his project mostly after I come home from work. That's why my time here is very limited but I do make it a habit to come here daily even if it's only for a few minutes.

@ashuli I agree that it is more relaxed but then I find working full time gives you more challenge and you get to meet more people. Although I work from 9am to 6pm (5 days a week), my boss is very flexible, like on Mondays, he allows me to leave half an hour early so that I could attend my bible studies. And I always enjoy the company of my office colleagues and the working environment is so wonderful as we are all like a family.

@Jlyn10 same here, due to this freelancing work I receive, I'm able to talk to people living across the globe, know them, share with them, know their views etc etc.. For all this... I give full credit to freelancing work or earlier I never ever dreamt of talking on daily basis to a person leaving in Denmark or any other part of world... and now just feel like a big family with them... But as we all know with every good thing there are hidden bad things too, so i have experienced the bad part too like clients breaking trust and vanishing without clearing the payments etc...

I would love to freelance write full time but the income is too sporadic to be any better than extra pocket money - I would not quit looking for real work as a priority. Online work can dry up without notice. It is a very volatile and finite work area.

@ashuli I have a regular client that I work for online and he is the only one that I work for now. I do get other invitations for work but then I turn them down mostly because I don't have much time for other work as by the time I come home from my regular job, I get too tired after doing my regular client's work online.

@arthurchappell I agree online work can't be relied upon because it's too sporadic. I would never rely solely on it as a source of income. It's a lot better if it's an offline freelance job, even though you still aren't privy to the fringe benefits afforded full time members of staff.

I believe that a full time job is better. People should start with a full time job and put some money aside, freelancing can be interesting, but it takes time before starting to earn.

@LadyDuck yes full time job is a secure option but as per my own experience, if somehow we can manage time n other things, doing freelancing (writing jobs) is also a good option to earn in spare time without going out of our home...

It depends upon your financial needs. If need the money for your regular expenses including loan installments, then you do need to look at full time employment unless you have a good part time employer. Otherwise, I am for part time employment or online employment, whatever you call it.

The temptation to give up searching for a permanent offline job assuming that there is always the alternative for freelancing work needs to be curtailed. A secure job is what one should look for.

@ashuli I agree, Anshuli. We can't just take for granted that what works for us will work for the next person. Different things work for different people, and we all have different circumstances. Saying everyone ought to get a full time job sounds too prescriptive.

First of all it is tough for an Asian to get gigs in free lancing sites. It is meant for westerners. You have to be lucky as well as extremely talented as they mostly prefer westerners. So, there are some good freelancing sites for Indians and Asians too. I will do a freelancing job in my part time and try to increase my user base. And keep it a part time only I guess. As full time job is my priority every time. There is security associated with it.

@ashuli You are the lucky minority I guess. As what I have read and heard its tough for most. I haven't done any freelancing as I don't have spare time, So can't give my own view. It's what most of them have to say. Between you are in the field for 3 years, while I mentioned as a fresher it is tough. The rockstar gig workers in Fiverr are westerners. The top gig workers are westerners. I rest my case.

@mkmex I am sorry but i cant agree with you on this, as per my 3 years+ experience it is not like this... Infact western clients trust the Indian freelancers more and like to offer them work, as 90% of my freelancing work comes from US, Europe, Australia

I would supplement my full time work with freelancing simply because I can. I am from a family of hardcore bankers and am one myself so there's respect and bucks in doing what i am naturally good at. But writing is my passion, my hobby and therefore I would be earning while doing what i love, on weekends. Doing so is not only safe but also the extra cash would only help you better

I agreed with you ashuli. I choose freelancing. But one thing like the others said no pension scheme, medical benefits and others is quite stressful. I find myself freelancing after I work outside for few years, only now I decide to have a freelancing job. Like you said, it gives one flexibility on everything, no bosses, no need punch card, I can do work whenever I want at any time of the day.

But one thing you lack is retiring scheme. What if you're old and you can't work anymore? Do you have EPF (Employee Providence Funds) or insurance to cover you for that?

I have both. I am full time Real Estate Broker and managing our very own Real estate company. AT the time, I have an online job which I've been doing for 8 or 9 years now and that is teaching online. I never lost a student at all. The income in m online job is very steady. And the other job i have is my online shop. I have two. One online shop sells makeup cosmetics and the other one is selling organic skin care products. Those jobs are keeping me busy during the weekend. I could teach when I'm at home and staying at my desk in the office as well.

I somewhat prefer freelancing jobs, because they afford you a lot of flexibility. At the same time, they're a nightmare because you don't enjoy the same benefits as full time, permanent and pensionable member of staff. You miss out on the pension scheme, medical health cover, paid holidays etc all of which your employer usually contributes towards. -and you could find yourself without a job if your employer decides to not renew your contract, sadly.

Generally all clients are in different time zones, so earlier it was a big problem... but after discussing with them the different time zone issue, they all agreed to give kind deadlines for submissions... n things just happened... I'm in India, so its like when its morning here, its almost night in US kind of 10-12 hrs difference...
