iPad or Android tablet?

Androids are obviously less expensive: you could by ten Amazon Fire for the price of one iPad Air 2. On the other hand, there are reasons why inexpensive tablets cost so little and the really good Android tablets can cost as much or more than Apple. Apple has more applications than Android, but all the important apps are usually available on both platforms. Apple apps can only be obtained from Apple (unless you jailbreak) but some Android apps have been malware. Apple operating software is updated frequently. Google does update Android, but the tablet manufacturers don't always keep up. That's particularly true for the cheaper brands. I actually have more than one of both, but I like the iPads better.

Technically speaking, the Amazon Fire tablets run Fire OS, which is a modified version of Android. I really haven't cared for the previous versions of the Fire OS, but from what I've seen of the newest one I might have to revise my opinion. They've done away with the Carousel feature, which I really hated. I was disappointed when my Kindle Fire stopped working a while ago, and still haven't gotten around to fixing it. I've really liked what I've seen of the new Fire tablets, so I think I may just end up getting one of them to replace my daughter's Kindle Fire and take the older one for myself. Overall, I'd say that I like Android much better than iOS. I find it has a lot more options for personalizing things, and it seems a lot more user-friendly to me. I have an iPod Touch and I'm constantly having to look up how to access certain settings. Android is a lot more intuitive and easy to navigate, in my opinion. I'm finding fewer and fewer apps that are iOS exclusives these days.

@pcunix It probably is. What really sets Android above Apple for me is the way that the settings menus are easily accessible regardless of what I'm doing. With iOS, I have to exit the app I'm in, go back to the home screen, and access the settings from there. It's just something I find annoying.

@yukimori You don't have to exit if settings is open. You just switch to settings and switch back ?? And how often do you do that anyway? I rarely change settings.

@yukimori Maybe. I think your "intuitive" is also perhaps prejudiced, because I find Android unintuitive - but I think that's just a matter of my being used to how IOS works. If I used Android more often, I'd know where things are.

I'm an Android fan. I'm not very tech savvy so to me, value is more important. Android tablets are a lot cheaper and they work just as well so I always go for Android.

In my experience, the cheap ones definitely do not work as well. But you may have a brand I haven't seen.

A lot of people who don't own Apple products don't know that you're buying tech support with your iPad. If something goes wrong or I have a problem linking it to my Macbook all I have to do is go to the Apple store and they'll do it for me for free; or, I can call Apple and a tech will either walk me through it or do it over a connection line. You don't get that with Windows or Android....not free, anyway.
