What's the difference between Interesting, Top Rated and Hot posts?

Mostly when I'm looking for something to read on the 'explore' page, I go to the new discussions. Others will of course take a different approach but I like to get in early on any topic and I've a tendency to get lost in ones that are too long established and have a lot of comments. But my question relates to the other options on that page. What is the difference in definitions between Interesting, Top Rated and Hot posts? Is somebody somewhere in Mylot land checking them and saying 'Hmm, that's interesting but it's not hot'? Are there 'top rated' posts that aren't interesting? I've not been here long but so far I can't figure out what the differences are. Maybe if I knew and understood, I'd be dipping into those categories more often. If anyone can help explain, I'd be grateful.

So far , most of my posts are always at the Top Rated post . I suppose it's because it got lots of likes and responses . But as to interesting , i think i always skip that and go to Most Recent always then curious to see who are at the Top Rated .
