DNA ethnicity

I took a DNA test in April to work on identifying my paternal genealogy. Part of this test included my DNA ethnicity, which it thought was amazing. I always assumed I was just plain old Caucasian. My DNA test revealed that I had very trace amounts of Asian, and a good chunk of middle eastern in me! I never would have guessed! What is your ethnicity? Have you done a DNA test to confirm!

I haven't done the DNA but according to Genealogy I am English on my Father's side and English on my mother's side too. My husband's family is from Greece with a bit of English thrown in.

The DNA test is so cool! If you watch, ancestry often has it on sale for $79 instead of $99

No, it's not something I've ever wondered about and I'm not sure that knowing would make any difference to my life.

I thought it was really interesting but my situation is. Ery different. My paternity is unknown. I know nothing about my father or his family, at all. Knowing what I inherited from him is very comforting in a way.

@Samanthavv That absolutely makes sense that you'd want to know as much as you can. I'm remarkably indifferent to where I've come from and not even tempted by all the genealogy that seems to fascinate people these days.

@boiboing it's been a very long and painful experience for me, I have gone through seven traditional paternity tests, all negative, to dend up doing the autosomal DNA test in hopes that someone will match me and I can trace the DNA back to my father. I don't know a name or anything really. The one fortunate thing is that doing this ethnicity test has allowed me to know more about him. My mom took the test too so I could phase her results out. For example, I now know my father had Iberian and middle eastern in him. He was likely part Puerto Rican. I also know that several of his sets of ancestors were from Kentucky and I have identified seven or eight couples I am 99% he is also descended from. It has been very enlightening and while I still haven't figured out who he is, it is nice knowing something about him.

It really is. Before doing this test, I knew absolutely nothing about my paternal lines. Now, I may not know who my father is, but I do know *something*

I love all of the information that comes with the DNA genealogy. You can even connect with genetic relatives. I have found many 4-6th cousins on my fathers side!

I've never done it and I don't think I'd do it unless I have to. The cost for a DNA test here is pretty high. I am curious about my genealogy though.

The autosomal DNA test is actually pretty affordable in comparison on to a paternity test. A paternity test can easily run $500 or more but the autosomal DNA test can be obtained as cheaply as $69 if you watch for sales.

How many generations the DNA test can go back? My mom's father always looked in my eyes as someone from Greece but he was born in Yemen, but had blue eyes which is not so common. Also in my country a lot of people are aloud to have citizenship in Spain if they can prove they are descendants of Spanish ancestor, because a lot of Jews were deported from Spain in the 15 century. My last name is on the list of people that could get the citizenship. I have always felt connected to Spain and my looks is more Spanish like, than my ethnicity look.

As far as I know, it can trace genetic relatives back eight generations, but it can trace your ethnicity down to 0.02%

I have not had a DNA test, but it would be interesting to see if it matched with what I have been told. I am a real hod podge, but I have documentation of being Native American, and many other things as well.

Many people do the DNA test to confirm Native American and I have seen many people be. Completely surprised that it was just a rumor!
