dumpster diving is it safe

I saw some people in the states do dumpster diving. It is wherein people go on dumpsters and search on stuffs on which they can use or sell and results to them saving money. They actually can get valuable items there and people just throw away stuffs that they dont need anymore. How about you ? Have you done this? Or would you do this?
