Last night, we watched the film entitled 12 years a slave. It was based on true story of Solomon Northup. He was born in New York State, a free African-American. He was kidnapped in Washington D.C. year 1841 and sold to slavery. My friend ask me to help her ragarding a speech base on that story.

Slavery is something the average American or other free individual anywhere in the world really can't imagine very well because most liberated people are indoctrinated in the essential importance of personal rights such as freedom of speech, the right to resign from your job at any time, freedom of religion, and the right to relocate to any city in your country at will. But slavery is a form of imprisonment, not for committing a crime, but simply because you are considered property by the slave owner, and as such have no more rights than the farm animals he owns. While today people are concerned about cruel and unusual punishment of convicted criminals, the cruel and unusual punishment of innocent people made into slaves was not questioned in the communities in which slavery existed. In the mid-19th Century, slavery was the key moral issue that separated the northern intellectuals from Boston and New York from the southern gentlemen from Atlanta and New Orleans. Political discussions were heated. Although there's strong evidence that the Civil War was fought primarily to hold the United States together for the sake of the central power of the government in Washington DC, the motivating factor of many of the Union soldiers from the north was the immorality of southern plantation owners who owned the slaves. Although today's African-Americans are free people, the legacy of slavery follows them inside their minds. Never have any people been treated so badly in the history of the United States as were the slaves.
