no power between key and what ever chip is there

We have a pt and we are having a lot of trouble trying to find out why there is nothing happening when you turn the key there is plenty of lights and horn and indicators but nothing else our mechanics are having a hard time getting information we live in a country town and it is hard to get to adelaide as we are on a pension. even our mechanic is having trouble getting anywhere can anyone help us please
