Wrestling with lunch

A charming country pub caught our eye while looking for somewhere to eat. Once inside, we admired the décor, and ordered burger and fries. Some of the food on offer sounded overly fancy, with high prices, so we kept things simple. Unfortunately the chef hadn't kept things simple. The meal was presented on a wooden tray with sides about 4cm deep. No plate. The fries were scattered around, and the burger was a lopsided tower of ingredients held together with a wooden skewer. Call me old fashioned, but burger to me means something you can pick up to eat. Scooping the bun bonanza from the tray, I concentrated on not poking myself in the eye with the skewer. First bite went reasonably well, but started a landslide of tomato, bacon and onion rings. I didn't dare let go of the bun as it slithered around in my hands. I have to say the burger was one of the best ever taste wise. It was a shame eating it was quite a challenge. And if we go back to that pub any time, I'm going to ask for a plate.

Sometimes chefs seem hell-bent on recreating a simple dish into something fancy, don't they? I know the feeling of being too scared to let go of the bun.

@JudyEv I don't order burgers often as they seem to be getting trickier to eat....or maybe I'm getting old!

@JudyEv Probably true, though some "chefs" have the knack of filling the edge of a sandwich and leaving the middle empty.

@kizzyB I sometimes find that burgers and even sandwiches are so fat that you're battling to get your mouth around them. I think it's so they can charge more.

Sometimes I don't understand people. Why didn't you ask for a plate at once?

That will be because we're British. A restaurant can serve up poison and when asked "Is everything alright?", the average diner who has left 80% of their dish will say "Lovely, I just wasn't very hungry". Thankfully these days they can then go home and absolutely slate the place on Tripadvisor.

I guess they get bored serving things the same old ways, but if it ain't broke, why fix it?

The term 'trying too hard' springs to mind.
