Teenagers and Cell Phones

Ok - so we just got my daughter a cell phone. She's 13 and we got it about a month ago. She acts like it is her lifeline! We have to take it away from her because she would be on it for hours. We have rules about it, like it stays in the living room overnight. Any suggestions to keep me from going insane about her lack of wanting to be involved in anything with anyone else, but her phone? It's getting so frustrating!

I think she should be allowed one when she turns 35.

I think this is good advice. We used to say you could blame bad behaviour on the fact that kids were teething - which they did till about 20!

I am so glad these weren't around when our sons were growing up. It really becomes such an obsession. I don't have any suggestions but wish you well with it.

She is too young to get a mobile phone, in my view. It would not only distract her from her studies but she may become less active socially. It would be prudent and safe to take away the mobile phone from her for her better future ( I am sorry if my views look harsh)

We had told her if she started acting responsibly...while she proved she could...now I guess we just take it away when she doesn't listen to us. Tonight I told her 3 times to put it away and she would for like two minutes and then get it back up...I finally just took it away.

@kimmiedunne I'm so sorry you are going through this..thank goodness i never had to..they weren't invented yet..hahaha..well i guess they were but not for the poor..I always wished i could shut my kids away from 13-17 and then let them out..those are the worst years and i went through that 5 times..i was crazy..hahaha Hormones and such get in the way.. You seem to be doing the right thing and keep it us..you are the parent and don't give in no matter how much she seems to hate you but you are doing what is best.

Now if you bought her then now its useless for restrictions because its an addiction.

Maybe you should sit down with her and discuss the dangers that the phone can bring

Kids love technology. And we do have to realize that this is normal for them these days. Unlike when we were kids. I understand about rules and they should be followed. Both my kids have iPhones and they don't spend countless hours on them. They use them as needed. My daughter does text her friends and calls them as well. Girls are more chatty and seem to like talking on the phone more than boys do. My son is mainly into his X-Box and he does text some of his friends. But I cannot complain about the usage of their phones or iPads.

True, many people, especially young people, gets too preoccupied with their phones that they could look at it for hours. What opened my eyes to realizing I should disconnect myself from my phone is a video on Youtube. That actually inspired me to look up more and enjoy the beautiful things in front of me rather than looking at my phone for hours. When i'm watching a play, or a concert, I turn off my phone instead of videoing the play or the concert and just be immersed at the experience since it's much better to look at the real thing rather than in the tiny screen of my phone. I hope that your daughter will soon learn the value of looking up and immersing herself in the beauty of the world rather than looking down on the flat screen of a phone. Kudos~! Here's the link of the video I love to watch to remind me to LOOK UP!
