Veterans day puts Americans in mind of those who fought in the wars. In all countries there are men and women who have given their lives for their country. But we don't often celebrate the unsung heroes of war. I love dogs, many of which have served in wars defending their comrades even, for some, to their death. Some have received the purple heart. I am not an advocate of war, however, I honor all those who have fought because they do so desiring to aid their country and fellow man. I also honor the memory of these courage four-legged veterans. http://dogtime.com/dog-health/general/10959-five-war-dogs-for-memorial-day
Five war dogs who served in the armed forces during the Vietnam War, World War I, and World War II; including a German Shepherd, Yorkshire Terrier, and a Pit Bull.

Canines are the most loyal of creatures and we take advantage of them by training them to sacrifice their safety and lives for that of a human. I think it's unfair that they're so often forgotten, they give selflessly. Thank you for writing this.

yes they do..their loyalty is unmatched and often goes unnoticed or appreciated. I am glad that they have at least given them 'purple heart' and commendation in this instance so we are made aware of their loyalty and great service.

It is becoming more know now because a lot of the dogs are being shipped back here to be with their trainers and they settle in very well from what I have read.

@Marcyaz yes, I have read that as well. Many are being adopted and live out the rest of the lives in peace..which is a kindness they deserve.

Yes, your are right a lot of dogs have been in the war and some have even given their lives. All the veterans should be honored and even the four legged ones.

@marcyaz & @dorianna I think they are honored on memorial day, I recall several sites on the web showing the various canine heroes who lost their lives saving people or in battle.

yes, especially since they gave themselves without full awareness of the atrocity that we were inflicting upon them, 'man's war'.
