More Tales of Village Life - Sunday League Football

One of the longest running disputes on our village Facebook page is about Sunday League football. This particular 'issue' combines some of the hottest village topics - littering, swearing and dog poop. It's compulsive reading. The football pitches that are used for Sunday League football (soccer for the US visitors) are in the middle of quite a large housing estate. The Poop Angle: The football club claim that the dog owners let their critters poop all over the pitches and say they have to do a poop inspection (and collection befor each game. The Litter Angle - the dog walkers claim that the footballers leave litter all over the field, especially energy drink bottles and cans. Of course the players say that's rot. The Profanity Angle - there's an old chap whose house is close to the pitches and he claims that the footballers swear so badly that his grandchildren can't play outdoors when the games are on. He's been reporting the club to the council (and threatening to get the anti-social behaviour guys onto them). They claim he shouldn't have bought a house next to a football pitch if he couldn't deal with a bit of swearing and that all footballers tend to get a bit over-excited and at times their language can get a bit colourful. We don't live anywhere near the football pitch but I love the fights on the Facebook page about it. I can't see a time when the dogwalkers, players and neighbours will ever find common ground but I intend to continue to enjoy the online conflict.

I've just come across a member who doesn't know where to find topics for discussions. Pity that he's from Pakistan. If he weren't, I'd advise him to move to an English village...

I'd be happy to read tales of the bizarreness of life in a Pakistani village.

Since you have such a way with words couldn't you pour a little oil on troubled waters? When I lived near a village there was also a problem, not with footballer but with cricket matches on the village green. Broken windows and flying balls being the problem they had. Are there no poop bins for people to use or litter bins in your village?

@boiboing Having lived in such a village I am afraid you may have to wait at least another 11 years for your views to count. I had a friend who had lived in a village all her life and she was an 'insider', I was an 'outsider'. Coming from suburbia I found that very divisive.

@41CombedaleRoad My mother lived for about 10 years in the village where she had been born and lived until she had married. Her mother had been the village post mistress, he father had built half the houses in the village. When my parents returned in their late 50s, the stayed another 10 years but they were always treated as 'newcomers'.

Oh no, that would be impossible! We've only lived here 11 years so we're practically 'newcomers' by local terms. Actually, it all takes place in a different part of the village and I keep my nose out of it. I think on FB it's best to avoid getting involved when people are fighting. Poop bins - yep, they're everywhere but they don't always get used by the dog owners who won't take responsibility for their doggy's poop.

I'm intrigued by the profanity angle. Most of the profanity we hear in our garden comes either from the local secondary school kids or from the dogs next door - they "swear" at everyone who goes through the alleyway between our houses!

That's funny. The dogs have a wide vocabulary, I guess.
