My Reading Challenge

As a writer, I will do anything necessary to improve my writing skills. And I mean just about anything. Actually, a month or so ago, I got some money together, put on a hat and sunglasses (it was raining) and I went to the store and bought the new “Twilight” book. (The one where they gender swapped the characters. When I went through the checkout, the cashier asked me if I needed a bag. I told him “Yes, because I don’t want anyone to see that I am buying this.” He started laughing and asked me if it was a gift or for me. This is what I said. “Sadly, it’s for me. I am a writer. I write books. I have made it my goal to read almost everything I can. I want to read this so I can learn from it.” He told me that was actually a good idea and he understood. Right now, I have challenged myself. Last year I released a book on amazon. I feel that I did a pretty decent job, but I also feel there is always room for improvement. My challenge, is to read all of V.C. Andrews books that are available. I also made it a goal to read 50 books this last year. (I completed this goal in about 5 months) and then next year my goal will be to read 100 books. I feel that until I read about 150 books, I will not be ready to publish my next couple books. I chose V.C. Andrews, because I wanted to stick with an author that sticks with the same writing style. I know that she died in 1986 and any book that has been released since then was actually written by her ghostwriter (Andrew Neiderman). However, doing it this way has taught me a great deal of information. I have learned to try and not use the same phrases too much. I have also learned that if I want to have all my books or even several of them, be in the same style, to change it up a bit. I am excited to finish this challenge and will be posting book reviews. I have so many to post, because I just joined this site, so I might post a few each day!

I love to read and read most anything good and bad. Several years back I took a writing course and the instructor said one can learn as much from bad writing as one can from good writing. You quickly pick up what's wrong and learn what not to do. Every book offers something that is beneficial. I like reading new author's first books. I read a lot more in the cold weather, averaging 4 & 5 books a week, but I slow down considerably in the warmer seasons to maybe 1 or 2 weekly. Reading is essential to improving writing skills as well as one's vocabulary. With your goals and effort your next book is bound to please you more, tho we are never totally content with what we write. That is a good thing, it means we will continue to improve and excel.

@MALUSE Sorry. I wrote it on another program. It was all great until I copied and pasted. I will make sure to do that in the future.

Yes reading is very important to your writing ability. I try to read about two hours a day if I can. After I read I try to remember some key techniques and methods of writing that the author used and recreate them in my own words. This can be very beneficial as well.

@chance216 Yes, I like noticing the different way a writer uses words. Reading enables a skillful use of language which makes your writing more colorful and interesting.

Well good luck on the challenge and i hope it works out for you. I could never read that many books it takes me awhile just to finish one book as life gets busy. But if it helps then it's a great way to do it

reading is essential for any writer - you learn from both good and bad reading which improves your own craft considerably. Good luck with both your writing and your reading

I'm not going to read the new Twilight book, but I do understand. I have read The Flowers in The Attic by V.C. Andrews. I want to read the rest of the series, but haven't yet.
