Why don't you just block them?

Since joining MyLot, I have seen multiple posts on the topic on posting multiple disscussions in a row. Those disscussions pretty well cover the topic. However, I wonder why you wound not just block a person whose content gets on your nerves that much. I know topics like that must be discussed, but as a new user it is a real put off. I know there are tons of people who have registered, and posted little or nothing. How many of them are put off by the manner in which this topic is addressed? I hope no one is afraid to post because of how they will be judged. Maybe topics like this are better left to private message, so that a reader who is nervous to post won't get put off because a mistake of another. If that doesn't seem to work, then the block feature would be the next obvious step.

I wrote a discussion earlier about some people not having anyone else to talk to except people on here. I think we should remember that and be careful how we judge others. And I also think seeing posts that are negative towards some people does make people hold back somewhat. And that is sad, we should all feel comfortable here and we should be able to express ourselves without worrying what others might say.

That is where I suggest blocking. People will create their own cliques. People like grouping themselves with similarly minded people. It was your post that got my thinking a little more compassionatly. The world is filled with negativity, that's covered. Humans are seeking connection, and need to interact. How a senior group accepts and teaches new members to assimilate to the model matters.

@BethieAnnie How is it NOT negative to the people you're suggesting we block to find out that they've been blocked? I'm missing the logic in your proposal. Surely better to just scroll on past and ignore them than to let them see you disrespect them so much that you don't want them to read and comment on your posts.

@boiboing I think you misunderstood. My proposal won't work because blocking doesn't work this way. The negative impact is whenthe same topic is repeated no matter how many times, people tend to stop processing what they have been told. Then other people come along, and read it and become afraid to post at all. The negativity is not in the information being presented, itis how it is being received. My proposal only works if you could block their content as well, and you can't. I guess, when we correct others here, we need to remember our audience is not just the person who wrote the posts, and do the best we can.

The answer to your question is very easy. Blocking doesn't stop people appearing on the most recent list. It only stops someone commenting on your posts.

@BethieAnnie Not too much point reminding them either - they don't read or they don't want to understand. I find it pretty easy to just keep on scrolling.

@boiboing the poor people on mobiles suffer to scrolling! Hah. Too bad MyLot doesn't have a learning center.

Really? Well, then. I would have assumed you could prevent yourself from seeing their content. I haven't actually blocked anyone. I guess that would not work after all, which leaves you with little choice but to keep reminding people.

Since myLot changed a bit, I find I am easily able to avoid what I dont want to read. It is great really. Yes the blocking feature is here for a reason.

@PhredWreck Well we can always avoid whatever it is we feel we need to block either way.

I see no reason to block people, I scroll the discussions and I only read the ones that I judge interesting.
