Skippy and Mates

Generally animals just go about their business around me. They seem to know I am an animal lover and no threat but occasionally there is a rogue... My parents took me to a wildlife animal park where you can walk amongst the emus and kangaroos and buy little bags of grass pellets to feed them. Sounds very cute, doesn't it. There was a sign that said something like "Don't approach the large male kangaroo in the red collar as he is known to attack". My parents poked me and made sure I knew to keep away from him. I KEPT right away from him - but noone had given HIM that lecture about me. I was bending over patting this nice, calm kangaroo - when there was a tug on my dangling arm, I turned around and the big, damn kangaroo with the red collar had his arms crossed over each other, wrapped firmly around the leather cord attached to my KANGAROO SKIN purse. We did that to our coat of arms animals in the 1970s - turned Skippy into a handbag - but I digress. The strap was still around my wrist. He wouldn’t let go and neither would I. It had my pocket money, hankie and whatever else 9 year old girls carry in their bag and he wasn’t having it. The kangaroo – WAY taller than me - leaned back on his tail a bit and tugged hard and I was pulling back when my parents AND the zoo keeper rushed over, all telling me off, of course. Zoo keeper got my bag back, while my parents did the “We told you not to go near blah blah blah..." Although I got berated and frog-marched to the car by the ear, I don’t blame you Mr huge kangaroo. My bag could have been a relative of yours. I HATE that roo steaks and roasts are on the shelves in every supermarket. I am told it is delicious but I am NOT eating Skippy EVER. Our Army actually uses wild kangaroos as target practice from helicopters – AND wild horses in the Snowy Mountains. So cruel. The horses have been there for generations but “greenies” say they are destroying the habitat… Sometimes I despair for “Humanity”. Anyway, you are safe from my diet, Skippy and Bambi – but look out Porky Pig. You are irresistible.

I never knew the army did target practice on those creatures. So, why do you like to eat pork, but not roo? Byron Bay next to you is the perfect place to go vegan. Been there so very many times!

@MoonHowler17 We have very convincing fake cheeses that are vegan & fake meats of every kind. Have you tried any? Been to Byron Bay?

Very good question, @veganbliss. I'll never be vegan as I love cheese. I eat mainly veg but regularly have fish and chicken in a Thai style. Unfortunately, though I love piggies, I do have a pork or red meat craving every few months and give in to it and couldn't give up bacon. I have no desire to add more animals to my meals.

Apologies, @veganbliss. I live very remotely - quite near Byron for the past 18 years in fact - and don't often have access to internet. Yes, I have tried fake meats several times but my body tells me what it needs. During pregnancy, that was usually vitamin C in the form of oranges, tomato and asparagus. About once every 6 months, I crave red meat and eat it with gusto (and no guilt). I don't even want to think about fake cheese.

If it wasn't so scary, it would have been funny. You were very lucky that the kangaroo didn't hurt you.

@MoonHowler17 We are a little fearless when we are young and like you said, being such a young age, we wouldn't have seen the warning signs.

Yes, I probably was lucky, @simone10 The 9 year old me wouldn't have noticed body language like whether his ears were back or if he was getting his powerful feet ready for a well-aimed kick to the head. NOW I'd be terrified and let it have the bag.

Lol. I hear you. I don't think I could ever eat, a roo or Bambi or a horse.. but it is so hard to resist bacon and I do love beef.. I am an animal lover but I really and not a vegetable lover I would likely starve without meat, but I do have my limits. No veal or Lamb either-- not eating any babies.

Thank you, @softbabe44 I am just where I need to be - on a beautiful, isolated property, river flowing past, just me and my dog, abundant wildlife 'though I haven't seen any Skippys yet. Bandicoots, koala (growls from his tree at night), probably the odd wallaby, BIG brown snakes to look out for - the ideal Aussie bush retreat. Your koala avatar - are you a former Aussie?
