Why do people feel entitled.

In the industry I work in I find that customers are always asking for discounts and freebies.
Now when they are told they are not entitled to any discounts they get angry.
Why do people feel that a service provider needs to provide the customer with discounts just because?

It's the entitlement generation who has been handed everything instead of working for it, so they expect it and when they don't get it, they get angry.
