Feel moody about working on Christmas Eve

Christmas is a public holiday in Singapore, even though many of us do not celebrate it. Most of us like to go out for a meal or just enjoy the festive atmosphere in the shopping malls. That is provided the companies allow half day off on Christmas Eve. In my current company, the policy states that we can go off 2 hours earlier if we can finish our work. As it is near the end of the year, it is peak period for our department. I feel moody about working full day on Christmas Eve. I think I will feel even worse when I see colleagues from other departments go off earlier and switch on the lights in their office.

I have had several jobs where I had to work on Christmas Eve and it's not fun at all. Fortunately, we were usually able to leave a little early.

If everyone can leave at the same time, you will not feel so bad. The sad part is that nearly everyone leaves before you can finish your work and go. If you think about it, now is the end of the year, and the accounting department will be very busy. Everyone can go home, except them.

@scheng1 Yes, this is very true. A lot of companies have year end reports and such that needs to be done.

I can understand this feeling. In fact when I graduated from school and started to work. I felt bad since I went to work in the morning and went off work nearly night. It was dark outside and I felt my most precious time was wasted in the office to work only. If it was still sunny outside after work, perhaps I would feel differently. Hopefully your hard work gets more paid. Here if you work for the public holiday, you are supposed to get triple paid but I doubt whether all the bosses will be so nice to follow this.

For me, I am a contract staff, so hard work will not get paid. I do not work more than necessary, and I always try to be the first to go. Since there is no prospect for more bonus or salary increment or promotion, there is really no point to work so hard. I just work hard enough to earn my salary. Having said that, contract work is more relaxing than permanent work.

I would hate working on Christmas Eve. When I was still working in the office, I hate it when our Boss requires us to report to work and I always file a leave or just absent myself whether she likes it or not.

I do not mind working on Christmas Eve, as long as everyone can leave early and at the same time. Today I am rather fortunate. I finish my work early, so i can go off at 3 pm sharp. No one else can leave. They have to stay back and finish their work.

I know it is sad but think about the doctors, nurses, policemen and so many others who have to work too.

The work is not the part that makes me sad. The doctors, nurses and others are all working a fixed shift. I feel moody because most of my colleagues will go off early because it is not the peak period for them. Only some of us have to stay back. By the time we get to go home, I think most of the offices will be locked and dark with lights switched off.

I'm sorry that you have to work Christmas Eve - will you just get the one day off?

No point taking the day off. It will cost me one day leave, and I do have to keep the leaves for holiday next year. The annual leaves are very little. Some people have 7 days a year only. For us in the office, we are more fortunate to get 14 days a year.

How come so many people don't celebrate Christmas in Singapore? That sucks that you have to work all day :( At least you don't have to work on the actual Christmas day like a lot of people, doctors, nurses etc!

We are not Christians, that is the main reason. I manage to knock off on time today, and leave my colleagues to their work. I have expected something to come in at 2 pm, but the dispatch guy was relayed due to the rain. I just shut down the computer, and left for home.

Sorry that you will be working late while others get to leave early
