I'm throwing things away, and feeling good about it!

I'm the kind of person who hates throwing anything away that has even an infinitesimal chance of being somewhat useful sometime before the end of the world. And I'm sorry to say that my office reflects that fact. It's stuffed! But today I've been going through drawers and boxes and putting some things in the trash where they belong. Truth be told, I'd really like to hold onto a lot of those old magazines and keepsakes of years gone by. But reality (and my wife) says I've got to bite the bullet and start clearing out non-essential stuff. And you know what? I'm actually feeling good about it, like I've done something heroic. Well, given how much it hurts me to throw things out, it was pretty heroic.

I watched my father hold onto anything that had an "infinitesimal chance of being somewhat useful sometime before the end of the world" . What a great line. And yet I do it too. I am gradually gradually reducing.

Every once in a while I also go through and throw things away. It's a great feeling!

I wonder if you have urge to go out to buy more magazines to fill up the space. That seems to be a common problem for hoarders. Once they throw some things out, they feel the need to buy other things to fill up the space again. They just cannot bear to see the drawers and shelves empty.

This is something we all need to do more often.

It hurts to get rid of our things, but it must be done. Glad that you are beginning to feel good about it.

I know what it's like. I went through that a couple years ago when I moved. I'd been in the condo about 18 years. Even though there wasn't a whole lot of storage in there, well, just say I made the most of it. But I had to let go. I found notebooks from college I forgot I even had (how much neater my handwriting was back then! And people were complaining about it even then). Alas! Out to serve a more noble purpose and be recycled. So, yeah. It hurts, but it's good to let go.

You're not the only person like that. My husband is like that. He holds onto what seems like eveyrhing. Going through stuff to get ride of thing seem so hard for him to do.
