We went out to Italy grocery shopping, early in the afternoon. I have bought salami and prosciutto to make sandwiches for lunch. Back home, I decided that, instead to use a normal bread, I could bake some small Italian focaccia (flatbreads). The dough is the same that we knead to make the white bread, with the addition of a couple of tablespoons of olive oil. It is also necessary to brush the focaccia with olive oil before baking in the oven. The small focaccia are delicious stuffed with cold cuts. I always bake more than I need, so I can freeze some for later. Have you ever tried focaccia? I am posting a photo to show you how they look like.

I would not try to bake focaccia, but I like it. Seeing yours, I am thinking that I have not bought some since months. It will be in my next shopping list.

I remember when I was a kid in school, at mid morning break, what we had for snack was a small ham with salami, I have always liked.

What is it about those cold cuts that makes them look distinctly European?

I know that they are different and my favorite are the Italian cold cuts. What you see in the photo is only made in Italy it's called "Culatello", it's a special cut of Prosciutto, very good.

@TheHorse Years ago it was impossible to find the culatello outside of its region of origin (Emilia-Romagna), my Mom was born there, so it's something that I appreciated since I was a kid. It is true that we slice the cold cuts very thin.

@LadyDuck I think cold cuts might be sliced thinner in Europe, though I'm not sure of this. Thanks for the info. I don't think I'd heard the word "culatello," at least not since my year in Italy as a child.

I have bought Focaccia Bread in the bakery. Also many years ago made it and its easy, but its even easier to make a loaf of bread in my bread maker.

@LadyDuck I laughed about putting the bread in the oven, as most of the time I'm not looking for more heat in the house. Years ago when I lived in a different state I used my oven a lot, as it added warmth to the room.

The bread is not exactly the same as the focaccia, the focaccia bread is similar but not identical to the real Italian focaccia. I have a bread maker that I never use, I prefer to put my loafs in the oven.

I am not into the tradtional Italian food we have here so I doubt that I have gotten into this. Would love to eat some of the other things besides spaghetti. I am not a noodle lover.

We eat spaghetti may be once a month. Spaghetti are southern, they are the most famous Italian food in the world (with pizza), but in the north of Italy they are not so popular.

NO, the focaccia never has cheese on top. It is baked to be used like a sort of bread, you only brush a little bit of extra virgin olive oil on the top.

@MALUSE Yes, ciabatta (that means slipper) is a flat loaf.

Ciabatta comes as a loaf. Focaccia is usually smaller and flat, like the bottom of a pizza.
