I used to go to a meditation class which was run by a local buddhist group. They taught us to meditate by sitting in a chair with our backs straight, placing our feet flat on the floor, closing our eyes and focusing on the breath as it enters and leaves our nostrils. You do not need the breathe deeply or anything like that, just breathe normally. They also taught us that if our mind starts to wander, as it almost does, then return our focus to our breath. I try to do this on a daily basis for 15 minutes, but if that is too long for you, then just practice it for a smaller amount of time - even a minute each day will be beneficial.
