Seven Childhood Memories Challenge

@Lori A Moore challenged us to think of seven memories from our childhood. I am behind (and have been since childhood) but here are my seven now. 1. My absolute favourite thing I had as a child was my playhouse. Yes by night it was a garden/bike storage place but during the day it was my playhouse. 2. I remember turning 6 part way through the school year and deciding I needed to begin grade one. Much to my frustration that wasn't the plan, so I took matters into my own hands and secretly Followed my brother to school. 3. When I went to elementary school everyone went home for lunch. Everyone; there was no possible way to arrange to stay at school for lunch. Every neighbourhood had a school within walking distance and lunch was 1 1/2 hours. Teachers could go out for lunch too. My mom came home on her lunch break to breast feed the babies and have lunch with us. 4. I used to help my dad make breakfast every morning and felt quite proficient. Once when my parents slept in I decided to surprise them. Unfortunately I turned on the wrong burner. The egg carton was sitting on that burner and burst into flames. Luckily my dad rushed in and quickly put it out. I was 6 when I did that too. 5. The first time I went skiing I had to ride the pomalift alone as it's a one person lift. The empty poma lifts return to the bottom quite high up in the air. I envisioned myself dangling from one of them as I couldn't picture how I was going to get off that lift when I reached the top. So, I flung myself to the ground and got away from that lift. My mother coming up behind me had to join me of course. Unfortunately that slope wasn't the easy way down. 6. On the same ski trip I rode up the gondola to the ski slopes with my older brother. There was a stretcher hanging below one gondola car and he told me I would be coming down on that. That was mean as I was already feeling scared in the gondola. 7. The next day on the same ski trip I wanted to go to the baby sitter with my baby brother instead of skiing. She left the baby with her mother and took me to 101 Dalmations with her friends. Now that was a great day. I was seven. I love skiing and it has been a life long dream to live in a ski resort town. This spring I am going to do that for one month! This is a pomalift
In this video blog Martin Heckelman demonstrates how to ride a 'Poma' or button lift. These lifts are not very common in North America but you'll find them e...

I did not experience any one of the items on your list. Often with such lists I have several in common with the author, but not yours. Going home for lunch? Nope. U.S. lunches are only 30 minutes long. Most little kids brought a brown paper sack with lunch inside.

It is different now, no one goes home for lunch anymore and teachers have to supervise while they eat and while they play. Usually 20 minutes to eat and 20 to play.

Great memories! I watched the video because I did not understand what a Poma Lift is, now I know, those are the most popular in the skiing stations in France.

@paigea I remember that I lost my shoes on a chair lift when I was a kid.

They are very rare here now, so I found the video. I like riding them as I am always nervous on the chair lift.

@LadyDuck My husband lost his mitt on the chair lift. Luckily we were able to ski down and find it. Did you get your shoe back?

I just did this challenge too but couldn't remember who started it. It was really hard to pick just 7 because I remember so much from my childhood.

I am afraid of ski lifts, but this looks worse than what I have been on. I am thrilled that you are realizing your dream. You must tell us where you will be going. I enjoyed reading your childhood memories.

@paigea I remember how much you love to ski. I am sure you will have a wonderful time and nice, warm, cozy dinners, too. I have a friend in Florida that goes there to ski. This year she plans on going to Utah.

We will be skiing in Banff Alberta for one month. I am looking forward to it. I have been there many times but never for this length of time. I actually like riding poma lifts, they are easier than T-bars. But that first day; I panicked.

My husband does a variation of #4 a few times a month. In him it's not egg cartons, it's turning on the wrong burner, and roasting a burner cover. It's become a running joke in the house that twice a week he cooks, and once a month I'm getting another set of burner covers from Dollar General :) I have never in my life been on a ski lift. Too afraid of heights! I actually never heard of a pomalift until your post.

at once a month needing new burner covers. On a poma lift your feet stay on the ground so it's a good one if you fear heights.

I'd quite like to ride a poma lift but I wouldn't like the snow so Winter and skiing holidays don't appeal to me

I am trying to picture riding a poma lift without snow. Skis with wheels? They do have those. I see athletes training with them in the summer. (cross country skiing type training)

I have a lot of memories--in fact I wrote a book about them that was published in 2006--both good and bad--if I bring up the good I have to bring up the bad and most people dont' do the latter in these type of discussions. :O)

My bad memories seem to be more recent. The things that seemed bad as a child didn't turn out to be so bad after all.

I hope you have great weather for skiing. I loved your childhood memories. I didn't ski until I was in high school but fell in love fast. I'd still be skiing but my surgeon who gave me a new knee made me promise I wouldn't ski again before he did the surgery.

I used to snow ski all the time. I learned in the Rockies when I lived in Denver, but now skiing is on my "never do again" list unfortunately. At my age, and having not skied for several years now, it would be a complete disaster. I did so enjoy it though when I was younger. And I have a few ski stories to relate too. Hah!
