Random Word Post – ruche

I find a random word by flipping through my 2003 The New Webster’s Concise Dictionary and write a quick – often silly – little post about it. # “A pleated or gathered strip of fine fabric, worn about the neck or wrists of a woman’s costume.” It apparently comes from the French form of the Medieval Latin rusca, or “tree bark.” Yes, because when I see something frilly around a woman’s wrist I immediately think of trees. Huh? I almost said something along the lines of, I’m glad I’m a guy and can just wear a t-shirt, but it wasn’t that long ago, historically speaking, when men wore frilly stuff around their necks and wrists. Fashion is weird.

I just wear basic practical clothes so panst, jeans, shirts, etc. - some frills and fashion accessories can look lovely though - just not on me

Ruching is still used. Odd how the word developed.
