It seems that more than one-third of US workers, invented weird excuses for calling in sick. Some of them were incredible creative, this is a collection of fun (or weird) excuses: - the cat was stuck inside the dashboard of the car - the doctor ordered to go to the beach because of lack of vitamin D - all the underwear were in the washing machine - a tree fell on the car - the cat unplugged the alarm clock Have you ever used one of those excuses?

@AbbyGreenhill Do you mean that you had 12 days a year to stay home in case you were sick? I do not remember if we had a maximum of days.

No, I haven't used any of them. I was sick when I phoned in sick and that was very rare. Once a parent brought their kids to school late and said they missed the bus because the bus came on time! I guess that bus driver was usually late. We thought that excuse sounded funny.

Yes, the bus excuse sounds funny, but if the bus was always late, can be true.

When I was young I worked in Italy, if you are sick one day you do not need the doctor note, just call the office, but from two days you need it.

Waking up early has never been a problem for me. I usually went to work even if I did not feel very well, I know that one time I lied, I stayed at home pretending I was sick, but I was out with my boyfriend.

No never. I didn't mind going to work. I would even go in sick but a lot of time had to leave before the day was over. I didn't have a bad work environment or people I didn't like to work with. I had a good time and it was a nice place to be.

No, I haven't. I do think that a tree falling on a car is quite valid, especially after the Hurricanes and winters we experienced up north.

I am sad to say the tree fell on a car happened more than once this year. It was on the news, so every boss could see there were people that actually could end up late to work. Amtrak wasn't running, so that wasn't an option to just take the train. Many roads were under water, so not everyone could work. I used this excuse many years ago and had a photograph to prove couldn't get to work. My boss ended up sending one of my co-workers to pick me up, so both of us worked longer that day and the co-worker took me to work until my car was considered totaled by the insurance company and I bought a new one.

@LadyDuck It wasn't a late train it was a no train for a day and a friend gave it as an excuse. She doesn't have a car and uses Amtrak for travel to work. She has a monthly pass and even uses the train for her vacations. The boss was aware and she wasn't the only one that had an excuse to take a day off. Her boss paid her for the day and anyone else that couldn't come to work for the same reason.

It happened here too that trees have fallen on the cars. For what concern a late train, this is not taken as a valid justification to be late at work.

I think in this aspect here we do it better. At least I haven't heard anybody who uses the weird excuses for calling in sick. Perhaps we still pay attention to keep our jobs and therefore we seldom have a day off work. Sometimes even if I am feeling ill, I will still go to work.

@LadyDuck Yes, traffic jam usually causes being late to work. Perhaps Americans are much more creative and therefore they will think out these excuses. Or they can find jobs easily and therefore they are not afraid of telling a lie for calling in sick.

The statistic was made in the United States, I have never heard such weird excuses here. At most people arrive a bit late because of the heavy traffic.

I haven't used anyone of those excuses. I doubt if I will as I always do my best to be at work ahead of time. If I will give an excuse, I want it to be so bad, that it will sound good in the ears of my boss.

@LadyDuck ..Ironically, my boss often did not believe that I was sick. lol. If I was sick say on wednesday, I would drag my feet till Saturday and take saturday off so that I would get enough rest on Sunday as well. He on the other hand thought I was enjoying taking two days off.lol. Proves truth does not always pay..lol

Years ago, when we didn't get points for calling in sick, I would call in whether I was sick or just wanted the day off. Once we got docked for calling in, I only took off when necessary and told the real reason why. I've heard even more far-fetched reasons than the ones listed above, but don't remember them at this time.

@LadyDuck There are times when I will work when I'm not feeling well, but it will depend on what the problem is or how bad. I work with people all day long, so I wouldn't want to give them something contagious, on the other hand, I've never taken off just from having a cold. These days, I seem to have more problems with allergies instead of colds.
