Daisy And Her Latest Antic

Daisy, our dachshund puppy, will be seven months old on the 21st of January. She started out as this hyper little ball of fur and has now settled down quite a bit. She still has a lot of energy but seems to be able to channel a lot better. Even though she has settled down somewhat, she still has some habits that will probably be with her for a while longer. For instance, she still likes to play in her water bowl. She can see her reflection and tries to 'play' with the puppy in the bowl. I will go in the kitchen and water will be everywhere. The whole bowl will be all over the floor and her feet will be soaking wet. It was cute the first time or two she did this when we brought her home, but not so much anymore. Her other habit is chewing. I'm sure this will eventually stop and it isn't as bad as it was but I do have to scold her several times a day for chewing on things she shouldn't be. It's not like she doesn't have a done of toys to play with. Speaking of toys, one of the toys she got for Christmas was a felt covered ball. It looks like a tennis ball but it's for dogs. Daisy loved that toy. Notice I say loved, not loves. Two days ago I noticed that she was awfully quiet. When I went to check on her, she had chewed the ball into tiny pieces and she was eating it. I picked up all the tiny pieces and worried about how much she actually did swallow. She seemed to be okay until about 3-4 hours later. She got sick and actually ended up getting sick 11 times in 38 minutes. It scared me so bad. I called the vet and was told what to do but unless she started acting different or stopped eating and drinking, there wasn't anything they could do. The best thing for her was letting her 'get it all up' so to speak. We've gone through a lot with Daisy but the ball incident was by far the scariest. I was so afraid that she was going to dehydrate but fortunately she pulled through it okay. Do you have a pet? Have you ever had a pet do something that really scared you or endangered their lives. This is a picture of Bella and Daisy. Daisy is the smaller, lighter colored dachshund.

Is it true that dachshunds are also called sausage dogs? I found that in a dictionary.

As children we always knew them as sausage dogs but the term isn't used so much any more.

@MALUSE What @Platespinner said. A lot of people call them wiener dogs, including my brother. For some reason he has a hard time saying dachshund.

Our dog Cricket who passed away never was much into toys. Bella and Daisy love their dogs. I guess Daisy loves them a little too much as she likes to eat them...lol.

My dachshund really doesn't like toys although she has some. She doesn't like the ones that squeak at all.

most pups go through the chewing things up phase - hopefully she'll grow out of it soon

I agree about the chewing phase but I had no idea that she would chew up her ball or I would have thrown it away.

Oh Sharon, I can imagine how much you were worried for Daisy. How is she today? I hope that it was nothing serious.

She was her old self that very night. She was a little tired but other than that, no damage. It really did scare me with her getting sick so much.

I can imagine how worried you must have been, and I'm so glad that she is ok. I wonder if she'll be able to work out 'cause and effect' so that she doesn't do anything like that again. Probably not

I was very worried since she got sick 11 times in about 30 minutes. I doubt she will associate what she did with her getting sick although that would be great if she did.

I am a dog lover and she is beautiful. Yes, the chewing will pass although sometimes it seems like it it never will. Is Bella a lab? She is beautiful too.

@Mom210 @Nanette64 Yes, Bella is a larger dachshund. Bella is the chocolate brown one and Daisy is the lighter colored one. They are both dachshunds.

@simone10 @Nanette64 They are both beautiful. We had a dachshund/beagle mix when I was growing up I use to love when it would show and he wanted out so I could watch him jumping from place to place in the snow. That was the only way he could get around, he was so small. He would come in and his little belly was so cold.

I have always had cats and they can really get themselves into trouble swallowing strings as it will tie up their intestines. I had a cat once who had a small red rubber ball as a toy. While in transition from the military we stayed with my dad. He had brought a tomato plant inside and as each small tomato ripened she stole it off the plant, thinking it was her ball.

Awww, how cute about the tomato and her thinking that it was her ball. I bet your Dad didn't appreciate it though.

We also have a local puppy who is grown up now , who would still chew on those plastic containers where we put his food . So, we would everyday change his plastic bowls and decided finally to buy him an aluminum bowl .

@simone10 In that case maybe you should train her to drink from a water dispenser hang in a place where she can sip on it just like my nephews' dogs do .

We have aluminum bowls for both dogs but Daisy can see her reflection in the bowl/water and will then jump in with both front feet trying to get to the puppy in the water. Water goes everywhere!

For 12 years I had an aggressive chewer so I finally had to buy only those toys made for aggressive chewers, it's their nature and some are worse than others.

Uh oh, she's an aggressive chewer @simone10 a lot of online sites sell dog toys for aggressive chewers, you might want to check em all out or get her a huge knuckle bone.

I know she chewed for a while because she was cutting teeth and that may still be the case. I just had no idea that she could tear up a hard rubber/plastic ball.

I don't think my pets have done anything quite that scary, but a dog we used to have did give us a bit of a scare once. My dad was watching her and had her outside with him. He turned around and a little bit later saw that she had found some rat poison that he had forgotten was out (he doesn't have pets so it wasn't something he normally had to worry about). He gave her a bunch of water and kept an eye on her but she turned out to be fine.

Bella & Daisy are both cute @simone10 . Daisy is lucky she didn't ingest so much that it would have blocked or twisted her intestines and colon. Critters can do some strange things at times. I have 12 indoor cats, 2 outdoor cats and 3 donkeys. One of the cats has a penitent for eating on plastic bags, which is extremely dangerous. Not only the chemicals but plastic can twist their innards.

I was very worried about a blockage because I didn't know how much she had actually digested. Fortunately, she is fine and most of the ball was in her stomach.

yes Coco was always eating or doing things that scared me of her safety. glad i came across this post. makes me decide maybe i am not ready for all that yet. hopefully Daisy has changed a lot of her habits by now. maybe Bella has taught her some things like my Bear did Coco before i lost him. When coco got sick last time i kept thinking she may have finally eaten something after her 14 short years here that affected her heart, sadly

Daisy is a lot better now but she will still eat anything off the floor so we have to be very careful. She has learned some good habits from Bella. Daisy has outgrown her chewing which I am very thankful for. I thought I was ready for a new puppy but Daisy proved me wrong . I now know that I will probably not ever have another puppy again. I will instead get a dog that is at least a year old or older.
