Trying Brown Rice for the First Time

In my other discussion, I declared my love affair with white rice . One of the mylotters, much2say, sort of got me thinking about trying brown rice. I have only tried it once and I did not like it. Since then, I avoided it and never tried it again. Then that discussion inspired me to try it and cook it for dinner tomorrow. I found a recipe for Brown Spanish Rice. I have most of the ingredient except for 1 major one - brown rice! I am not really adventurous in a sense that I have qualms in trying something new. But I learned a lesson that we'll never really know unless we try.

I like both brown and white rice. In fact, I'm off to get some Tom Kha Gai and am not even sure which they'll give me tonight.

I hope I develop some taste for it. It is nice to have some diversity to my usual meal and to know that it is a much healthier alternative.

We eat brown rice unless we eat at a restaurant. I am curious why you did not like it. Texture? I find it easy to cook.

I am also not sure, except I remember tasting it for the first time and it is too wild or grassy for my taste? That or it's not really cooked very well, I don't know.

@Raine38 Wild or grassy? Maybe it wasn't cooked well. Do you mostly eat processed food? Call me curious. I'm not relating to what you have said.

Speaking about rice (your topic from yesterday), I had brown rice mixed with white rice porridge I am not a fan of brown rice by it self.

How was your porridge? I don't know why I never developed any taste to brown rice.

@Raine38 I am not a fan of brown rice either. Porridge was tasty actually. White rice porridge is bland, but with the brown rice it has more flavors especially when you put the chicken in also. I don't like wheat bread either ... I eat it but I totally prefer white bread.

@amnabas I think what is missing is the main ingredient - the brown rice , because the name of the dish denotes it specifically - Brown Spanish Rice

Brown rice does have it's own special nutrients as compared to the white rice.

I ended up cooking the brown rice cajun style. I had some cajun seasoning, some peppers, kielbasa and some herbs. It was good. I will still make it spanish rice style, but it will take a little longer to cook than usual. Maybe I will try on a weekend when I have more time to prepare it.

I read brown rice is good for our health. I have tried brown rice and some other rice when I visited some vegetarian restaurants, they taste good. But, I still prefer white rice. Hope you'll enjoy your new recipe!

Brown rice is good for a side dish or other meals. Perfect for Spanish rice, taco salad, or stuffed peppers. Try Minute Rice's Brown N Serve for easy cooking and eating.

I like both kinds and get the brown basmati rice which I find delicious. Brown rice, like whole wheat bread is far more nutritious too. I like that nutty taste, but it does need to cook longer.

I like both white and brown. I also like black Imperial rice as well as wild rice. And I like jasmine rice and sushi rice. I think my favorite right now is a particular brand of Calrose white rice.

There isn't a variety of rice I've tried that I didn't like. I think it all depends on what you do with it. Eating it plain is just... bland. Rice is one of those foods that can be amazing in the right dish.

I was thinking of cooking the brown rice like a spanish rice. I ended up cooking a cajun rice with kielbasa. It was actually good, I guess cajun seasoning is always good.
