Flipping thrift store items

Kingston, New York

We have a local thrift store/food pantry that gets the best donations of items! Designer bags, which need a close inspection, really nice bakeware and dishes. I personally have enough at home but like to look for a treasure just looking to be found. This morning on TV I watched an ad featuring a new app to resell designer bags. My treasure hunting juices are flowing again!

@Rondout50 I sell on Poshmark, an app for iPhone and android users (for US only). Poshmark takes 20%, you get 80%. You could sell new or pre loved items.

There are people in town that use items for yardsales but that is too time consuming.

The thrift store where I live has no good finds, but I have seen a lot of people score awesome vintage designer bands at their thrift stores. I am jelly! Happy Thrifting though!

@Rondout50 I wonder how thrift stores figure out how much to list items. I've seen some random people on Instagram post their findings and people would score awesome deals like Chanel bag for $20, Prada, Rag&Bones, Tory Burch and high end designer items for literally less than $5 bucks!

We have a major name thrift store that should take thrift out of its name. I also think the employees get first grabs.

@infatuatedbby Not sure, unless they compare prices to other similiar items. I think a place like ebay would drive the prices, profit down.

I have a friend who makes a living by buying things in thrift stores and boot sales, and selling them on e-bay.

That sounds like an easy way to make some money, I particularly like the idea of boot sales. People have been known to pick up more than a bargain sometimes. But of course this happens to people who know what to look for.

That sounds like fun. There have been times when I've thought about heading onto ebay as a seller and not a buyer.

I have not tried ebay. I enjoy the search as much as the find, happy hunting!

@Rondout50 I'm with you on this. I also am addicted to finding things that I can put to use in the garden.

I used to be pretty heavy into the thrift store flip game, but it's very labor intensive. I've cut back a lot to focus on other things. If you have the time to invest into hunting the valuable items and listing them online, it's a pretty good source of extra revenue. Last winter I pulled in about $2,000 in profit strictly by flipping thrift store finds. Now, I only buy items that I can make a minimum profit of $50. Those are few and far between.

Unfortunately there are no thrift stores in my area that I know about. Perhaps one day the idea will catch on in Greece and then I shall go out treasure hunting too.

That's me, an extra dollar here and there, don't want to make it too much of a chore.

@Rondout50 exactly. The reward has to be worth the effort. Once it becomes a 'job,' it isn't fun any more. Life is meant to be enjoyed, why do something that you don't enjoy?

Absolutly, but since the 'pickers' show has been on people are more careful of what they give away.

I think lots of people shop these places for bargains to resell online for a profit. I see nothing wrong with this. After all, we all are looking to make a few extra dollars.

@Rondout50 Me to. But I haven't seen anything that I think I could make a profit on. And besides, I love coming here to MyLot everyday.

With bags you've got to know what you're doing as there are some amazing copies floating about now.
