Bargain Birthday Card

It will be my husband's birthday on Saturday and I didn't yet have a card for him so when I landed back at Birmingham airport last night, I thought I'd better pick one up just in case I didn't get a chance to go shopping before the weekend. They have a small Marks & Spencer food outlet landside and as I passed I spotted a display of cards and picked one up. As the check out the card which had a sticker marked at £1.50 came through the till at a lot less. When the sales assistant asked me for 19 pence, I was really surprised. I asked him to scan it again to make sure as I didn't want to get him in trouble for selling me something way below the marked price. He insisted that if the computer said 19p, that was all he was going to take from me. He also said it was probably old stock and they just wanted to clear them. If it hadn't been so late, I might have gone back and picked a load more and asked him to scan them. But I'm happy enough with my one bargain card. Do you ever get lucky at the till and find an unexpected bargain?

@boiboing ....That's true too. And most stores want to suck every available bit out of a product before they mark it down.

Ah but if we had them all the time, they might lose the power to surprise.

I love the dollar store! My go to spot for cards and balloons. You could get cards 2 for $1 or, the more nicer ones for $1.

there are some very cheap card shops in my city - I feel a bit of a cheapskate getting cards from them but I often do

I think most people just like that you got them a card and don't care what it cost.

I think greetings cards of all descriptions should be banned. Complete, total and utter waste of the world's resources.

I particularly loathe Christmas cards. So I'll join your campaign.

You seem to have lots of luck! Once in a while I get lucky like that. My friend's family owns Marks and Spencer.

@boiboing It's her family - uncles, cousins, etc that are the wealthy ones. Not her, although she's not in the poorhouse. Lol!

I know a couple who goes to the card store on their wedding anniversary. They spend some time going through the cards. Each select one for the other to read. After ther have read their cards they place them carefully and neatly back on the shelf. On the one hand it seems so cheap, on the other hand, how clever. The cards are invariably thrown away.

That is a fantastic idea. A bit like when we go to museums and in each room we choose the thing we'd like to take home.

Special cards, like anniversary cards, are cards which I never throw away. :)

@Poppylicious at one time I saved all my cards, dried and saved all of my flowers, saved all programs, ticket stubs etc. Then we had to put everything we owned into storage. I thinned out. Took ten years to collect new 'stuff'. And moved from. A six bedroom house, with a large living room, a larger family room and lots of large closets, into a two bedroom, no basement house with limited storage space. I culled. Moved again, had to pay for storage for another 5 months. Nope, cards I had not reviewed in five years didn't make the cut. The letters my husband wrote when we were dating...I saved.

From time to time I get a few surprise. But not so often living in Tahiti. I don't think they clear out so much here and lower prices so low. From time to time you can find specials and it's a good idea to pick them up. They sell out fast and it might be a long time before another one comes around.

I work at a grocery store and if we have something that we need to get rid of we mark it down super low. The customers love it. :-)

I've purchased a pair of new look sandals for $4 instead of the $50 stated on the tag. The first thought which popped into my head was if the product had any defects. Happy that it wasn't but the store was having a stock clearance.

Once in a mall, they declared a free cart for every 50th customer. When I came to the counter for billing with my cart, the staff told me that I am 50th . I got all my stuffs for free.

Wal-Mart and The Dollar Stores here in the States, sell boxes of bargain Birthday Cards. Usually it is a box of ten with envelopes and the box costs a dollar. That is what I buy.
