Cold Weather Woes: School Bus

Dayton, Ohio

Yesterday the school called me, or rather, a computer from the transportation department called me. No bus. The kids had no bus home because of bad weather and a shortage of bus drivers. Other schools were canceled, but not my kids school. I could only think, "If you can't get kids home from school on a snowy day, why was school not closed?" I am trying to be more positive in life, but something like that is not easy when you have an Aspergers child. When you have Aspergers, a form of autism, you cling to your routines. Something like this can be upsetting for him. What really through him into a tizzy is that he was told he was going to have to walk home with his little sister. That is 2 miles in snow, wind and cold weather. I know my son can do it, but my daughter is 8. I told this to transportation, they said that they would have sent a bus when one of the other routes finished. Meaning the kids would have been a couple hours late getting home. I got the call about no bus at 1 pm and by 1:30 I called the school so they could let my kids know. Today, my 14 year old Aspergers teen walked 2 miles to school. I can't stop him when his mind is made up. The bus did eventually come, but 25 minutes late. By then I already arranged a ride. I have a car, but I am sharing it with a friend whose care broke down. Without a way to and from work, my friend will not have a job. My friend can not rent a car, because you have to have a credit card here to rent a car. I depend on the school bus to get my kids to and from school because I do not get my car back until about 3:30 PM. The school needs more drivers, but there are not nearly enough people willing to do the job, especially this time of year. OK, that is my vent for the day. Winter weather woes just given me a little stress, that is all. P.S. I called the school and asked them to call me when my son got there. I just got a call from my son. I said, "Hello." He said, "Hi mom, I am alive." Yeah, yeah yeah, he knows me well enough to know I was sitting here freaking out that he walked 2 miles in this weather to school. He is safe, and my daughter had a ride. All may return to normal now. Well, once I figure out what normal is!

I know it is worrying and I know also the work arounds that have to be done with a child with a condition such as your sons. I am so glad he called you as well, he knows you love and worry about him.

@TiarasOceanView I am trying to remind myself that we raise them so they leave us. If we did good, then they go have a life of their own. Ekk, and this one is 18 in 4 more years. Where did the time go?

Yes, I was pleased to see him be so thoughtful. I do wish he would have let me get him a ride. I do suppose that boys will be boys.

I have never heard of such a thing. It never happened in our town, not ever. It seems like it should be illegal to not have enough buses.

@BethieAnnie There are rules in our state I think about how far kids can walk to school ( i think a mile is the limit) and the towns need to supply the buses.

See, I was under the impression that it is illegal. I guess it isn't.

They should have closed the schools if they were unable to collect the students. I am glad your son texted you.

I agree. Thanks, me too. I can't help but worry, I am a mom. I live in a busy city, in fact last night there was a shooting about 3 miles from here. 2 miles does not sound like a lot, but in the city anything can happen. I feel like the transportation department is mismanaging funds.

I'm glad your son got to school alright. Thankfully our buses run normally here regardless of the weather. If school is in, the buses run. Sometimes they cancel the rural buses, but they do that in the morning, so the kids aren't stuck at school. If they close early the buses run then. Hopefully your school district can get enough bus drivers so this doesn't happen again.

I know, getting the kids stuck at school is not really the way to do it! Things went alright today. I hope this meas that the issues are taken care of.

I think in situations like that the school should really have closed. To me it is unacceptable for you or your children to have gone through what you did. I am glad he got to school and home without any trouble.

I am glad to see so many people agree with me. I am doing more research and investigations. If this continues to happen, we parents will have to elevate it.

I've worked as an educator in the past 2 years and like the others mentioned here I find it unacceptable for the school to handle its transportation system that way. A child's safety should always come first. Side tracking a bit, your son's innocent bliss was adorable.

The teachers feel the same. They don't think it is acceptable to trap kids at school. It was adorable. It made me wonder if I might over react and worry too much.

Normal is a setting on my washing machine. I was a bus driver for years. Rural bus driver, town kids did not get a ride unless they were special needs. We had good drivers at that time and also at that time, if the bus could get through, school was on. We almost never cancelled. Had a freak storm once and they sent out extra drivers on all the routes, two drivers to a bus to make sure kids made it into their houses. In a case like yours, whatever drivers they had would have taken extra students on their evening route so that everyone got home on time.

OMG, why has no one told me about that. I I have to do to be normal is set a dial on my washing machine. Wow, life would have been easier if I knew that 15 years ago! Hehe. There are 12,000 kids in this school system between I don't know how many buildings. Managing that is not going well for the town ATM. It is weird though. I mean here is a good job, an no one wants it. I would think that people would just be happy to have a job. I know being a school bus driver is a thankless job, still someone has to do it. I am half tempted to get a second job driving the bus, just to be sure my kids make it to school.
