Blizzards, Hurricanes and Tornadoes, Oh My!

I have family that lives in NY city and are apparently experiencing the beginnings of blizzard. I live in the South and we mainly worry about Hurricanes and Tornadoes, but I notice a lot of folks that live in Northern states are deathly afraid of our weather. I find this rather perplexing because our weather (while deadly) is rather harmless unless its the higher category weather which we don't see very often. I mean, we can go outside and stay outside in it for most part (or at least run from it). A blizzard is not so forgiving - death to those stuck in a broken down car or can't find shelter in a timely fashion. Anyone want to enlighten me? Just different strokes for different folks?

Most of us northerners are not that afraid of the weather. Sensible behaviour is the key. The snow will melt on its own. Tornadoes and hurricanes seem much more destructive.

Oh I know that you guys aren't afraid of the blizzard. I was referring to the tornadoes and hurricanes that seem to be scary to most folks. I feel that while more destructive, they are over in a an instant and you can generally get out of the way. Blizzards to me, seem to last awhile and more likely to cause trouble. (power outages that lead to no heat and hypothermia, car wrecks, frostbite, not being able to get to a store for extra food or water, loss of paychecks due to closure of roads) Just scarier to me because ours our over rather quickly and only some cause extreme conditions.

@MrEwriter having experienced a tornado first hand. Give me the blizzard. You have much more prep time, and much less damage.

This might be a bad storm for us here but it is nothing we have never seen before. They did close roads, suspended buses and some trains also. That was all done for clean up and the safety of the people. Honestly, I don't understand why anyone here in the city would be in a car at all today. Unless it was an emergency.
