Random Word Post – jennet

I find a random word by flipping through my 2003 The New Webster’s Concise Dictionary and write a quick – often silly – little post about it. # “jennet – 1 A small Spanish horse. 2 A female donkey. From the Spanish jinete a light horseman” This raises a few questions. Why only Spanish horses? Why not a French, or German horse? I understand it comes from a Spanish word, but still. Also, how large can a small horse be before it’s no longer a jennet? And why are they confused with/similar to a female donkey?
