Are You Allergic To Cigarette Smoke?

I have had a problem with cigarette smoke since I was in my 20's and it seems to get worse as I get older. My husband smoked a lot when I met him but he realized that it really bothered me so he gave it up. Last year he decided to start smoking again because everyone at work was doing it, my allergies came back and I kept asking him if he was smoking and he kept telling me no. Finally one day I caught him outside smoking and he admitted he had been smoking for months again. He agreed to only smoke at work and not around me, that worked for a while as he would come home, wash really well and change his clothes. However, now that I work weekends he has decided that he can smoke then too now. My throat has been getting worse and now I have no voice left, he told me this morning I am just a hypochondriac. He says I just have bronchitis or something and will not admit that his cigarettes are doing this. I don't know what to do to make it better anymore, does anyone have a solution?

@cintol The smell is always there, even changing clothes w/o taking a shower won't help. I thought I fooled people for years but I didn't.

He doesn't smoke in the house, I won't allow it but the smoke is still in his clothes when he comes in.

How can he thinks he can fool you? Just the smell coming from his mouth tells he was lying.

@cintol The smell comes out in the pores of their skin. It is in their sweat, their breath and everything else about them. I grew up with smoking parents.

@GardenGerty I know, its disgusting. My husband has quit again now, I still react once in a while when he comes home from work and has one there but its not as bad as it was before.

If he can't quiet for the good of your healthy that's not a good sign. I know what I would do, but I won't say here.

@cintol I wuold not stay with someone unwilling to take care of his healthy and my own. We were both heavy smokers and we both quit. It's always a team effort. Good luck with whatever you do.

@AbbyGreenhill Thank you Abby, yes he has changed a lot with this new job in the last year or so. Seems he wants to be part of the younger crowd, maybe hes having a mid life crisis or something, I don't know. All I know is that he can take his cigs, money and go enjoy a life without me in it.

Sorry about that Maybe you should get tested and have the doctor tell you the main cause. That way he can believe you I don't know if i am allergic but everytime i smell the smoke i start coughing

I was tested years ago and was told that was the case. He just doesn't want to admit that he is the reason, its never his fault.

I'm sorry your husband's smoking is back and it makes you ill, he appears resistant to the fact that it is your allergies that are causing you great discomfort. He needs a wake up call about what he is doing to you. Maybe you should consult medical help and then revert back to him that it maybe life threatening. At the same time a doctor could help treat any existing harm that has been done.

Your right, I think I will go over to the doc and see what can be done. He knows about my allergies and doesn't seem to care so will have to try new tactics.

I don't but I am an ex-smoker. Somewhat. I vape now. Not sure what you can do. Just try to steer as clear of it as possible I guess. Your husband should be at least somewhat more considerate. He probably just feels this is your way of trying to make him quit by faking some illness. Either way...

Yeah, he thought that for a while but then we went to the doc together and the doc told him I could not be around it so he finally quit for good. I only get bad if we go somewhere now and someone is smoking but I try and stay outside and away from that person. Its hard dealing with it

I do think that you have allergic rhinitis. It might be from the smoke or dust. Things that would be allergen that triggers your allergic reaction. You can also asked hubby to stop smoking within the vicinity of the house like what @amnabas said.

That was the rule that he couldn't smoke at home, only at work but now he is getting addicted again and feels he needs it all the time.

It seems he is addicted and can't give it up. Since it is obviously hurting you I am not quite sure what you can do. Maybe getting an air purifier will help.

@cintol Maybe that will shake him up, it is too bad in this day and age with all we know about the dangers of smoking that he hasn't gotten the message.

Maybe a purifier would help, I will have to look into it. If not then separate rooms may be the next step.

It must be awful to live with a smoker whether you have allergies or not. I hope he can quit again.

Maybe if you took him to a doctor's appointment with you and he hears it directly from the doctor, he will realize you are telling the truth.

@cintol I am so glad that he quit. I am a smoker so I know how hard it can be to quit but if my brother told me the same thing you told your husband, I would quit.

Thats what I told him, I did go to the doc the other day and she wrote it for him. He has now stopped smoking again because I told him that as damaged as my lungs already are, I will probably be the one to die of lung cancer and I have never smoked. He agreed and quit. We shall see if it lasts.

For your health and for his too, he needs to quit. I stopped allowing guests to smoke in my house over 30 years ago. Where I live, you can't even smoke in bars and restaurants and must go outside the workplace too. His blaming you is very inconsiderate.

So sad that he is smoking again and that it affects your health. Hope things will be settled with you both. Take care and I wish you well.
