Why Are There Carrots Hanging In The Tree?

Three year olds can be exhausting. They have boundless energy, endless curiosity, and in Sandra's case a wonderful imagination. Yesterday she accompanied me and her Opa as we ran some errands. After lunch, in an attempt to have some quiet time, she settled to watch a movie. Movie done, we sit in the dining room colouring. Suddenly, she looks at me and asks, "Grandma, why are there carrots hanging in the trees?" It was a very windy day (90 km/h gusts) so there was a lot ove movement in the trees beside the house. I was baffled. Carrots? In the trees? I looked out the window, still puzzled. Finally I scrunched down beside her and asked here where she saw these carrots. As she pointed, I burst out laughing. She saw the pine cone dangling in the trees. Yes, they did resemble carrots. Have you ever noticed how much a pine cone hanging in a tree can resemble a carrot?

No, I have never noticed, but I will look today on my way to the supermarket. There are plenty of pines here.

@Morleyhunt the photo has been added. You'll need to enlarge it, if I cropped it any more it got too blurry.

The shape is similar but not the colour! At least not with German cones and carrots. Cones are light brown, carrots are orange/red. Maybe American ones look different. How come you use the German term Opa? Is this Opa German?

Opa is Dutch. The cones are an orangey beige I just took a picture with my iPad. I will add it to the post.

That is just too cute! I love the imagination of young children! I can see where she thought pine cones looked like carrots, at least brown carrots!

I could see them. No they weren't bright orange, but at a glance, they resemble carrots.

I never noticed that, but I suppose if it were a conifer that had long narrow cones they would look like carrots.

It has been more than a month. I am still looking at these pine cones and marvelling that it took a three year old to make me aware that they looked like carrots.

We have a pine tree on the border of our property and there are lots of pinecones that the wind will scatter here and there but I never really looked at them that they could resemble a carrot.

It was a who knew moment. They actually looked similar to carrots...the colour was a little off, but not even that far out.

I can see where a three year old would think those were carrots. Nice to see she recognizes her vegetables!! LOL

She can identify many things. Today we introduced her to Lima beans in the mixed veggies. She wasn't a fan.
