Why Is Religion Soo Controversial?

I think we all have the freedom to beleive in whatever we want but some people take religion way too serious and get defensive if you dont beleive in what they do. I personally was raised catholic and im not much of a church goer and I do believe in god even though I dont pray much. But I had a christian friend that tried converting me to his religion and became offended when I refused and said that I wasnt interested. He began ranting how I was going to hell for refusing the word of god ect and shortly after that our friendship ended. Why is religion such a touchy topic nowadays?

I am also Catholic, I cannot say that I go often to Church or I pray a lot, but this is my religion and I do not want to change.

I'm also Catholic and wouldn't change my religion. Politics & religion are controversial I guess because everyone wants to convert you to their way of thinking

I agree but we should have the freedome to beleive in whatever we like, some people want to force their belief system on you and its annoying

It's also a big puzzle for me. Religion ... no matter what it might be should build friendship and not destroy it.

@BACONSTRIPSXXX There is a song that says " and they'll know we are Christians by our love ... by our love ... yes they'll know we are Christians by our love." I think he should just listen to this song and reflect on it for a tiny bit to see if he is displaying true Chirstian qualities.

I guess it affects different people differently, some folks take religion way to seriously IMO. I have been an atheist for so long that I know, you can lead a horse to water, but you can't make the horse drink the water.. Timing and readiness is everything, and it's not something we can hurry. So getting stressed about a person's unwillingness to embrace a particular life style does very little in this case. It can be counter productive instead.

@BACONSTRIPSXXX Thanks thanks! But I have found my calling and I think on my way to being a catholic.. But I think my time spent as an Atheist taught me not to rush "the preach"..

I think it has become a security blanket these days. If someone is 'on your side' you feel safe and comfortable. But if someone is against your faith, that person might be a threat in some way. One of the reasons I like pagans and Wiccans is because they are so laid back. They really don't care what you are as long as you aren't trying to burn them alive.

I'm between agnosticist and atheist and I always tolerate all the opinions about this. All the people have the right to believe in what they want and not be disturbed about that. Believe in what science says are also acts of faith, cause it can't show everything and just considerate that something is like some coherent manner until it can be demonstrated. But I don't like the people who tries to persuade you all the time (catholics or atheist), don't tolerate your thoughts and often without arguments enought.

I think it has something to do with foundation. Like A B C. If somebody told you the C is the A, you would not be happy with the person think he is wrong. But the fact is, C can be A in some of the codes that spies use. lol

I had that happen once. Of course this guy paid for me to go to bible camp. I told him all along that I was just there to see if it made sense to me. He was the one that kind of twisted my arm to go to bible camp. When he asked how I was doing with God. I gave him the most respectful answer while kind of saying I am unsure still. He told me to get sure and start finding God. I knew right then, his God was not right for me. He might of just been mad he wasted a one hundred and 50 bucks on me. That is why you do not force people.

Religion gets controversial because some people believe their religion is the only true religion and everyone else is wrong. I am Jewish but not terribly religious or observant. Still, I claim Jewish as my faith. However, I love learning about other faiths and even attend various religious services. which includes Jewish services. I incorporate other beliefs into my own and feel that I am a better Jew and person for it. You would not believe how many persons have tried to convert me to either Christianity or New Age groups. They were friends until they realized I was never going to change and then they turned on me and dropped me. .

I agree, everyone should feel free to choose whatever religion they can identify most with and as long as theyfind god and peace then that should be all that matters

Because the root meaning of religion is bondage. I got away from religion years ago, I couldn't handle the lies and drama.

I feel for you there my friend. I am a catholic too. I was born and raise catholic. Though I have friends in different religions, it is a good thing we do not discuss religious matters. We also respect our own beliefs and faith. My sister has been converted to be a born again christian, we pray for each other but we do not offend each other by saying bad words against each religion. I am lucky, I can say. But there are some people in this world who wants to insist that they religion is better. Well,I respect them but I hope they respect us too for our chosen religion and belief.

Im also a catholic like you. I have friends who have different religion, they try to convert me but i refuse because i will never change my religion because its been what I have been born with. but i did go with a friend one time in their pray house just to see how it goes. and i can say that its not that different. they also believe in one god. But i guess other people take religion just so seriously that sometimes they see other religion as offensive.

God is the one that calls people to him. If your mind was not open to it, it is God's will.

The answer to that is the same answer I give to many other questions: the human ego. Your friend (former friend, I should say) wasn't interested in converting you to God's way of doing things but rather in converting you to his way of thinking. Most of the turn-or-burn folks don't consider that they might be believing the wrong way. The Bible is filled with orders related to humility (walk humbly before your God, humble yourself, etc.), but the arguments seem to be based more on doing things man's way or this denomination's way. I have enough to make right with God to deal with first.
