White Tail Deer Checking Out My Garden

It seems as though the deer know when hunting season is over. We haven't seen many deer at our place in a couple of months. The other morning, as I was looking out the back window, I saw this small buck checking out my garden spot. Hubby tilled the garden yesterday and we will be planting a few things soon. I'm sure once the garden begins to come up, we will be seeing more and more deer.

Would deer respect an electric fence? They are pretty creatures aren't they?

JudyEv - deer can jump a 10 foot high fence w/o a problem.

@sgbrown What about a 'very high' electric fence? Just joking - I'm sure it's not easy to deter them. Shiny, whizzy things hanging on the fence? Or do they just get used to all these sorts of things?

They are such beautiful creatures, @JudyEv I love seeing them as they pass through out place. We have put up an electric fence before and it didn't do any good. They just jump over it!

The deer is cute, but they can be messy when they visit a garden.

Deer are so pretty and I love seeing them, but they can be very destructive to a garden. Last year they ate all my okra and black-eyed peas! This year we are going to try something different to keep them out of the garden.

@sgbrown Have you tried those automatic sprinklers, or the ultrasonic repellent? The sprinklers work with the cats.

@LadyDuck Deer don't mind rain or water, they aren't afraid of much.

I always think that I´d love to see deer where I live, but they belong to the northern hemisphere (and the country, I guess). There are lots of parrot like birds here. They are a menace although they are beautiful.

@sgbrown Wild animals are lovely, but I´d rather watch them from a distance. I have a couple of trees here that give lots of seeds. The parrots come, eat the seeds inside and guess who has to clean up the mess

I would love to see parrots in the wild. I guess we each have our different wild animals in our areas.

Plant lavender and marigolds around the perimeter of the garden - deer hate the smell.

@sgbrown It doesn't have to be a solid row- just enough so they can smell it.

@AbbyGreenhill Some has mentioned the marigolds. I will try to plant some around the edge of the garden and see what happens. That is going to be a lot of marigolds!

They are pretty. I plant marigolds all over my garden. It helps keep the rabbits out also.

You have special guests in your garden. Friendly nature attracts more deer to your garden.

I love seeing the deer, but I am not to fond of them eating all my garden vegetables!

You will for sure have deer around once your garden starts growing. Do you have any kind of plans to keep them away?
