Random Word Post – kelp

I find a random word by flipping through my 2003 The New Webster’s Concise Dictionary and write a quick – often silly – little post about it. # “kelp – 1 Any of various large, brown, coarse seaweeds. 2 The ashes of seaweed, used as a source of iodine.” I had heard of getting iodine from seaweed before, but I found it odd that there isn’t a special name for seaweed ash. Why reuse the word kelp? Or does burned seaweed kind of look like living kelp?

Never knew about burning kelp resulted iodine. They really should have a word for that burned seaweed. All I know is that my favorite animal, the sea otter, floats on those beds of kelp and look pretty darn cute doing so.
