The value of Tags

I have read everything I could find and I still don't quite understand the Tags section. I realise it's sort of like SEO to direct folks to your posts, just don't feel like I really comprehend. In fact, this week I noticed how people post tags (word, verb, best, choice). I obviously was doing this incorrectly (best choice, word and verbs...).
