The Legend of Hugnay Tree

“Hugnay” came from the scientific name family bignonaceae, it is a tree that bears a sour fruit and most women loves to eat when they are conceiving. The word “hugnay’ came about the origin of barangay Bugnay, since the tree is abundant in this area. Based from the story, the first local settlers are comprised of 25 families from the Butbut tribe around 1829 as claimed due to economic situation with contribution of driven them away from neighboring tribes. It is also a part of Butbut tribes: Butbut Proper, Loccong, Buscalan and Ngibat. Barangay Bugnay of Tinglayan, Kalinga became independent in the year 1963.

we had a shrub of this bugnay in the year 1980's. It is sour and i would dip them in salt. now, the shrub is gone, but I can still taste its sourness

@ridingbet Since I am living in the city. I haven't tasted this fruit for a long time. I had my first taste when I was in Isabela City.

@hexeduser22 The tree is usually can be seen in low land areas. Some local people call it "bugnay".
