What is this Acid Jazz of Which You Speak?

Because I listen to it, a lot, I write about acid jazz. A lot. So just what is this musical genre with the name that scares most music listeners away? The heyday of acid jazz was the 1990's, when a slew of young, jazz-loving musicians began to incorporate other forms of music into their jazz. Inside of any given song, you might hear elements of spoken word, hip-hop, reggae, rock, vocals, and, sometimes, just straight jazz. Basically, anything that worked, really, and most of it backed by dance beats. In fact, the Acid Jazz label released, over the years, a fantastic compilation series called "This is Acid Jazz," on which they described the music as "pure, unadulterated groove." And groovy, it was. That was key to the genre's success. The term "acid jazz" is largely credited to producer Chris Bangs (Quiet Boys, Mr. Electric Triangle) as a tongue-in-cheek shot at the LSD/ecstasy-riddled acid house scene. If interested, some bands to check out are Groove Collective, Brooklyn Funk Essential's, Quiet Boys, A Man Called Adam, Disjam, 9 Lazy 9, Broun Fellini's, Afternoons in Stereo, and Exodus Quartet (whose Eric Hilton would go on to form Thievery Corporation.) Below, I've linked to the CFM Band's "This is Acid Jazz," an exercise in high-energy jazz-funk that is just one example of this misunderstood genre:

Thanks! I think people who don't like jazz might like it just because it's so different.

Kind of a uptempo style jazz that brings the funk at the same time. Love the bass guitar on this. Thanks for showing me this.
