Can an American President be strong if Congress won't allow it?

There is much talk at present about how the United States needs a "strong" President - the implication being that Donald Trump will be exactly that and Barack Obama has been weak. However, does the American system allow a President to be effective if he (or she) does not get support in Congress? Is not the whole point of the US Constitution that no President can be a dictator? So in what ways can a President be strong?

@Mike197602 Yes I believe so as well Mike. I had to look it up then to satisfy my curiosity. Of course it is Wiki

Yes that is a problem if a president wants to put stuff into action, he is faced with passing it through Congress. I think there are times when a prez can make an executive order I am not 100% on that though. You would have to be quite a mover and shaker to get through this system here if you are president. I dont know all the ins and outs but that is my take on it.

I've seen this all the time when ever the president, senate or congress would collide because of difference of ideas and interpretations. The people should know their law makers well and because of it's family back ground.

Well! First we would have to define “strong”. Let's define “strong” as being a good leader who knows how to make the right decisions, especially in a crisis situation, listens to and knows how to apply wise counsel, and above all, respects the ideal of democracy, obeys the laws, and strives to do what is good and right for the sake of all the people. If that's the definition of “strong”, then the answer is Yes! However, he or she would have make it plain enough for “the people” to see who the bad guys really are and who is stopping the country from moving forward. American people are not known for just sitting back and letting their political leaders trample all over their rights. The POTUS and Congress are there because the citizens put them there. “We” are the people. We put you in. We can take you out! Yes I know. I'm a very unrealistic idealist. But that's how it's supposed to work! By the way … no matter what the form of government is - democracy, monarchy, dictatorship, communist, etc. - all human beings know when they're being stepped on.

I feel Donald Trump is good for the United States and Obama was a liar and did nothing for the U.S.

But my original point still applies - Congress has frustrated Trump's wishes on a number of occasions.
