Hi! Some of you might have heard that there's this one weird Filipino Delicacy which caused a lot of ruckus before.. Anyway, it's the BALUT aka duck embryo. It's really famous here in our country and (mind you) no matter how gross it may be for others; it is actually quite tasty! What about in your country? Any unusual dishes?

we eat it in the dark and most people only eats the yolk. They give the chick to their friends who likes chicks or to their pet dog or cat.

I have never been to the Philippines, but I would like to eat one if I get the chance to visit. I would only eat the yellow part I think. How would you describe the taste?

The yolk of balut tasted creamier than regular egg yolk. It is like a mixture of egg yolk and mashed potato for me. I usually give the chick to my cat.

@abrielle28 I know what you mean. sometimes the duck's hairy and big so it really won't be nice to eat

I love balut so much that I will even eat an Ostrich Balut..... In China, They have a version of Balut that uses chicken eggs instead. Back in the 90's there is a business owner who tried to make quail balut happen sadly it didnt became popular.

Lol! I can't quite imagine a quail balut. That would be so tiny! =P An ostrich balut though... now, that would be a giant. I'm wondering if that would even be chewable. =P In any case, I think one serving (that is, one piece) would probably give anyone a heart attack. =P

Well, we are kababayans so... ;) I am one of those who enjoy the balut every now and then. =) Not everyday, though. Just every now and then. =P I'm wondering though... what ruckus has it caused before? I'm not really sure I remember that...?

Thats just gross! You couldnt pay me to eat a bird embryo raw, like who comes up with these ideas?

Balut is not raw. It is cooked (boiled). =) I would also have problems eating anything raw (except carrots and certain other vegetables). But this one is cooked and I love it. Others who are not used to it would actually find it good also once they get past the thought of it. I think the reason why a lot of people are unable to eat it is more psychological than anything.
