A Different Role...

Today, at work, for a short while, I got to perform a different role than usual. I work as a cashier in a department store. Ordinarily I work at the registers all day, right where you'd expect to find a cashier. Today, however, I got to be a shopping assistant for a little while. There is this lady who lives in the area and frequently shops where I work. Although this lady can see, just a little bit, she has, in fact, been declared legally blind and can not see nearly well enough to shop on her own. So whenever she comes into the store, she requests for an associate to help her with her shopping. Well, today I was chosen to be her helper. I was happy to do it. I like helping people, and I like when I get to take on tasks that are outside the norm at my job. It breaks up the monotony and makes me feel more useful. Do you ever get to take on tasks that wouldn't normally be part of your job routine at work?

Yes, I did numerous "miscellaneous" tasks with my previous employer that were not within the scope of my job description. I learned a lot from it considering that they're outside my expertise. Though they're outside my field, I felt some sense of self-fulfillment.

I would enjoy doing something like this. I'm sure she was grateful for your help.
