A Hardy Flower

If you want a hardy flower for your garden, one that will still have flowers well into fall and sometimes even into winter then the straw flower is what you want. This is a beautiful flower and it's petals feel like straw. I have only seen them in two colors, yellow and burgundy. The yellow are more common and I have only seen the burgundy once. I have brushed away the snow and still have a flower. It's a pretty amazing flower. I have one pictured here, in bloom and still budding. If you ever have the chance to purchase a straw flower I suggest you get one. It will make you happy well into the colder months.

@fishtiger58 Ours insn't a rock garden - instead of dirt and mulch we have rocks. The photo was taken the day the job was complete...we do have small bushes planted now. Stuff that grows 'free form' no trimming!

I have to purchase one every spring as they don't come back, but I have to have at least one in my garden every year. Abby they feel just like straw and nothing seems to damage them.

@AbbyGreenhill I would absolutely love a rock garden. I have loved rocks my whole life. I wish I could talk my hubby into it. He compromised with me and we have huge river rocks as the border to our flower gardens. Guess that will have to do lol.

@fishtiger58 Do you know its scientific name? Our strawflower/everlasting/paper daisy is an Australian native so maybe it is slightly different.

It's beautiful. I've decided to forgo planting anything this year, that dern ground squirrel is still messing around and it's drivin Ally nuts, she's chased that lil varmint but she's not fast enough to catch it, I think I'm glad about that though.

Oh man that's a bummer @fishtiger58 I hope you find something they don't like which will make them go somewhere else. Have you tried putting chicken wire round your garden?

I just looked at my garden and it looks like the squirrels have dug up a few of my bulbs as well. Grrrrrr.

@rebelann Hubby refuses to do that. He says it will look ugly so I guess for now we tolerate the squirrels. They only do this in the spring. And only take a few, not sure why.

It really can withstand the cold. I was shocked the first year we planted this. To see it with snow on the ground was so cool. We buy this flower every spring since,.

I remember the straw flowers, there were plenty in a mountain village where my family used to spend the summer vacation. I remember them in many different colors, it's a shame that I do not have a photo.

@fishtiger58 I remember that I had a bouquet in my bedroom when I was a teenager, it's a shame that we had no digital cameras back in those times.

@LadyDuck I love this new digital age, especially where cameras are concerned. I have many photos from way back when but the quality compared to today doesn't even begin to compare.
