My real mash potoes came out like instan

When I make the potatoes in the box they come out lumpy. But when I decide to do real mash potatoes. They come out like instand no joke.As see in the photo ,yes there is some lumps but not a lot .It still more look like instand then home made .Yes I do leave the skin on.

Not sure if the skins have anything to do with it being lumpy. I like potatotes that aren't completely mashed myself. I think the rest of the family uses a stick of butter, milk, and makes them creamy creamy. I like mine with a few chunks of potatoes in but also somewhat creamy.

@eagletrek2 Can't use garlic too much here. I like my potatoes with garlic but the rest of the family, not so much. Do you use russet potatoes, white potatoes or red potatoes? I am not a fan of red potatoes, think they have too much of a "bite" to them.

In my opinion the best device to ensure lump free mash is a potato ricer.

@eagletrek2 do you mean the powdered stuff? If that gets lumps just pour in the boiling water slower and stir faster We have instant mash here and it's called smash...I didn't used to like it but now I don't mind it if I add a small amount of grated cheese and some black pepper.

Peel the skin off and add more milk a little at a time and some butter also and then they won't be lumpy.
