To be feared or to be respected?

They say, choose a job you love and you will never work a day in your life. But what if it’s the people you work with who won’t let you have your peace? This lady boss is capable. No doubt about that. Many years in service; impeccable record. However the people working with her FEAR her. Some would even tremble when she scolds them as if they are toddlers. And tears are but a common sight. Many have resigned. A few others remain. And their only delight is when the lady boss goes to business trips and they are left alone. Sadly, they didn’t even feel remorse when the lady boss’ mom passed away and she had to be leave the office for a few days for the funeral. Freedom they had even for a bit. We all need a job yes. I wonder how long they can hold on though.

Well ya it depends upon the environment where you are working as well.Everything counts. If the boss is so rude you shall either resign or should try adjusting yourself there.

This kind of boss is negative, people who fear the boss do not work well, because they are too concerned not making mistakes. Respect is what is needed, both to the boss and from the boss.

When she is away, everything seems so right. But when she's around, mistakes are everywhere.

And she does not bother you? Good if she does not. It is not good to work under fear, yes people do not respect her only fear her. She may pass as one so lonely.

Luckily, she is not my boss. And I agree with you. She must be putting up a facade to cover that loneliness.

I like that kind of boss as long as she treats everyone fairly. In that scenario, looks like she's fair. I'll follow her because of respect. I'm used to and I love people who are strict and who loves to berates others, not just scold. So, I'll stay.

When your Boss is a terror, naturally you will hate your Boss. As for me, I can never work with a terror Boss so it is better to just find another job.

If i were in her stead , i wouldn't like to be feared . I know she knows that , but she's just playing deaf or blind about it , because she just have to stand by what she is known for . But given a choice , i know she wants to change that . Too late , the fear is already ingrained to the employees . If she is here , maybe someone will have her submitted to someone who knows some witchcraft.

that is why we should always see the superiors if we find a job so we will love it too; working with and for a strict and proud boss will never give us peace and calm while working

It is hard working for someone like that, but if a person does their best at their job, they should not have to fear.

@sol_cee I know there are some people who should never be in a place where they boss others, but people are sometimes put in positions that they really are not qualified for.

I worked for one such who was very unpredictable. She used to purposely make it tough for others. She wanted others to stay back if she had some work taking furtive look at how uncomfortable they were! I recall once when we decided not to send new year greetings to her. She made such a fuss and then we had a good laugh when she was out of ear shot! siva

@sol_cee Most left including me. But there was one smart girl who used to manipulate her. We could not know whose side she was with. She used to be one among us but changed her tone when the boss was present. And again they had long private conversations! siva

There is a saying "Get out of the kitchen if you can't stand the heat." From your description of the lady boss, she has the ability and competence. However you didn't mention what management position she holds. I'm guessing she holds a strategic position in the company's hierarchy which need a taskmaster whose qualification do not require the reading of Dale Carnegie's "how to win friends and influence people" .

@sol_cee , if a person has a boss they fear, they will either have to become very tough, and find steel in their spine, otherwise they will have to look for other work. I have a temper, so I would probably have to look for other work.

Yeh, and something which some don't consider, but I would always suggest is another option is...to be liked or loved. Like, in some sense, I think ppl are afraid of that idea, or see it as not a reality-they've been wounded, and so want respect but will take fear, because somewhere in their minds they feel that otherwise they will be betrayed, or that "nice" people finish last. I think in some sense, well, in order to be whole people, we need to move past fearing...and also, move past the idea of others fearing us in order to gain respect. But all that said, ultimately the only ppl who can be free, are those who can live without the need of others validation or approval. If that makes sense?

This boss knows how to frighten others or her subordinates. This is the only management technique she might be aware of. Better she is trained in the other styles of leadership.
