Low Sodium

My husband had a doctors appointment yesterday to get his prescriptions renewed. He had some blood work done, and the doctor gave him the results. The doctor told him his sodium is dangerously low. He has to eat more salt. He said it was like my husband had been drinking excessive amounts of water. My husband does not care for water. He drinks one (16 oz) bottle of water a day, and I do not think that amount would lower his sodium. He informed us that it is important that he get his levels up, or he will start passing out or even having seizures from it being so low.

Yes, for me it is just the opposite. I have never heard of anyone's sodium being too low. The doctor is always telling me to cut my salt.

@slund2041 What are you going to do then? Just add salt to food or what? The doc said what to do?

@TiarasOceanView I am going to cook like I normally do, and he will just have to add extra salt to his personal plate. I cannot raise my salt intake.

There are several causes for the sodium level to go low. Since you are saying that your husband is on medication, probably that could be one of the causes.

@slund2041 He cannot do that unless he consults his doctor. His kidneys, liver and heart also needs to be checked.

Oh really! Should he stop any of the medicine that he is taking or just eat more salt?

That is strange as usually the sodium count is high from to much eating too much salt. Wonder if this is something else.

@Marcyaz Wow! They called again today, because he had more blood test yesterday and share the results with us. He said it is still dangerously low, to eat more salt. He has to be careful because he could fall and not realize he is falling.

I have no idea, as I have never heard of it before. He drinks one bottle of water a day, and that is what the doctor said caused it.

I never heard of that. I would love to be able to have to eat more salt, like an entire bag of potato chips! Hope your hubs gets his levels up.

I would like to be able to eat more salt too. However, I am worried he will fall. I do not know if he could physically take a fall without receiving a broken bone.

@slund2041 I hope he recovers and doesn't fall! That would be terrible.

Most people are trying to cut back on salt. My mother was always adding salt to just about everything but people nowadays are just the opposite. Hope he can get the levels raised without too much trauma.

@slund2041 Is weight an issue for him? I was thinking potato chips (crisps) would have a lot of salt and be easy to eat.

I have to use less salt as it is bad for high blood pressure sufferers

I wonder why that happened. Doesn't he take any salt with his food?

I add a little salt to my food, but not a lot. I am in bad health as well and have to watch my salt intake. He never added additional salt to his plate, because he was trying to be healthy.
