Hyacinth and snails

Red Hyacinth

The best smelling flowers of spring are the hyacinths. Such a sweet smell that drifts on a spring breeze and so intoxicating. They come in so many shapes and colors that will make any gardener happy. This variety is called a red. Not a true red but still pretty. But there is one thing about these beautiful blooms that makes them hard to grow is they attract snails with their wonderful scent and they destroy the leaves and blooms unless you take action to get rid of the snails as soon as the leaves start breaking ground. I have even seen snails on mine even when there was snow on the ground. So when Feb rolls around its time to treat for snails but of course none of the stores have snail killer that time of year so if I forget to buy it before the end of summer they get more of my blooms than I do. Do you have to fight snails off your spring blooms?

If you bake eggshells in the oven then crush them and scatter them around your plants, that may work. Snails don't like going over the sharp shells.

I've got some beautiful ones this year in lots of different colours but unfortunately I've had a cold ever since they started to flower and I can't smell them.
