The story of Jackie Robinson breaking baseball's color barrier in 1947 with the Brooklyn Dodgers is well known. Directed by Brian Helgeland, "42" tells that story in a straightforward manner and is a handsome production capturing period atmosphere. Robinson's strength of character is illustrated as he resists lashing out at the racism he knew was coming. Harrison Ford is spirited as Dodger general manager Branch Rickey who recognized Robinson was the right man to handle the heat. The fact Robinson was a tremendous ballplayer did not hurt. Chadwick Boseman is excellent as Robinson and this fine young actor later shined portraying James Brown in "Get On Up." Image is Pixabay

That is correct. His number is officially retired in all of baseball.

But they say he wasn't even the best black ballplayer of his time. He was the one they thought could "handle" the racism of that era.

That is correct. There were better black ballplayers but Rickey felt he was the one with the temperament to handle the situation.
