Hi! This my first post. I am an engineer who spent 8 years at office, in front of computer and doing boring things ^__^'. So, i decided to get out from my comfort zone and try many things that i never do before and first activity that came out of my mind is "i want to take open water diver license for beginner". This idea came out because there are a lot of diving spots in my country. I need your opinion about what are basic things i need to know about diving for begineer (except swimming, yes, i can swim :p ). About equipment i should have first, basic technique, or other things that i should now. So that's it, i am waiting for your comment, suggestion or anything related to my post. I hope your information will make me more motivated to do this activity. ~LetsTryNewThings~

Thanks Malu. Don't buy anything, don't spend out too much money until you've had a go. Most people love it and some really can't get the hang of it at all. Just find a reputable school - make sure it's doing PADI or equivalent certification - and start with a so called try dive. Then you'll have a fair idea if you can do it. I learned with a girl who wasted a lot of money going abroad and then finding out that she was just too scared to go through with it.

@boiboing thank you for your advice. I'll make sure to do that 'try dive' first before spend any money. I used to do snorkeling, but i think that diving is a different thing, it need a lot of preparation compared to snorkeling.

Hello Mela I am a Padi Master Instructor and have been teaching dining for over 9 years. If you can swim and have an interest in Scuba you will find it an amazing thing to do. You won't need to buy any gear but getting your own mask is always a good thing as its more personal to you. When buying a mask hold the mask in place without using the strap and inhale from your nose then hold your breath, if it sticks to your face its a good mask for your as the seal is air tight. There are many ways to get in to diving from the one day discover scuba diving to the open water course. if your unsure you can do a try dive at most dive centres worldwide. You can learn all the classroom part of the course online and thats called Elearning and is signed up for at PADI.com or your local dive centre. If you have questions relating to diving please feel free to ask me Jonathan
