Tragedy strikes

Tragedy struck the tight-knit world of Canadian politics Tuesday after a plane crashed in Îles-de-la-Madeleine, Que., killing former federal Liberal cabinet minister Jean Lapierre, four members of his family and the two pilots of the aircraft. The crash occurred as the chartered airplane was approaching the runway in poor weather conditions, and was very devastating for the Lapierre clan. Mr. Lapierre, his wife, two brothers and a sister were on their way back to the remote island in the Gulf of St. Lawrence to attend the funeral of Lapierre’s 83-year-old father, who had just died. I often listened to his comments on the radio each day. He seemed like a very fair and honest person. Texts and messages have been pouring in to the radio station, showing that he was well respected by all, and will be sorely missed.

Other planes had been cancelled because of the weather, so some people don't understand why this one flew.

@AnneEJ That happened when we were in Hong Kong. There was a monsoon, and a plane from Taiwan was told not to land. It did, and flipped upside down on the runway. At least one person was killed. We saw it on the runway a day or two later, when we flew home. Some people just don't listen when they should!

When a really good leader passes suddenly it is a shock to an entire nation. Sorry for your country's loss.

Heard on the news this morning that another small plane (on which a brother-in-law was a passenger) had engine trouble but was able to land safely.

We heard about this through Facebook a few days ago. Most of our Francophone friends in the Montreal area were sharing tributes to Lapierre. He was well loved, indeed, and will be sadly missed.

Yes, I will miss hearing him on the radio, although I did not know him personally. Sad thing for that family, losing so many all at once.

Yes, I can't imagine how that mother must feel, waiting for her family and then to lose them all.
